Many thanks for the advice. You always seem to be helping out with my ships' funnels: First the Normandie then the Michelangelo and now the Doria!

I've already tried looking through my PE box and I'm thinking of using 3 lengths of ships railings placed vertically and superglued together. The pictures show that the grille on the Doria was in 3 sections with thicker vertical members between. The top and bottom rails of the 3 lengths of PE railing will become the thicker vertical members - well that's the idea at least. I think it will work.

I'll have to carve out the top section of the funnel in order to build the inside and then form a cowl around the top. A fair bit of work to do but whenever you look at one of these models you always seem to be looking straight down the funnel ...... if the funnel doesn't look good it spoils the model.

Someone I know had a massive collection of large scale builders' models. He had one beautiful 5 foot long merchant ship; absolutely fantastic but when you looked down the funnel you could see that it hadn't been painted all the way down but only as far as the brush reached .....whenever I looked at the model that was the only thing I saw!

Have you seen Onno's streamlined ship model ? That's one ship I have to have ....... No matter how many I build the list just gets longer and longer!

I have had a look at flickr-- nothing there alas that is useful for the funnel

do however search the Life Magazine site--they did a photo coverage of the sinking

nice hgh res images--as the ship listed some of the images should show the funnel area

I think I can see what you mean-- but better images will be useful!

Hi guys, build is progressing but I've hit a problem with the funnel.

My plans show it as a "normal" solid funnel but the photos show a cut out on the front and another at the back. Does anyone have a clear photo of what the funnel actually looked like close-up?

Have this week started on a new model. This one is ....or rather will be .... the Andrea Doria.

Still in the very early stages so there is lots and lots to do.

Haven't finished the QM2 yet. I seem to be stuck on the 8 cat boats. I just can't seem to get them to look realistic no matter what I do. The basic mouldings aren't all that good so it isn't easy to make them look right. I gave up on them this week and decided to do something productive.... hence the Andrea Doria. I'll get back to them sometime in the coming weeks.
