Ok, after another decent break, an update. Also, I guess I should have made it clear that I was 15 when I started this ship, so many of my modeling techniques had not been discovered/practiced yet Small details have been created, now trying to find a place to buy the right prop couple vents/hatch door a ladder and some vents finished/weathered the crane and equipment for unloading the hassan d, the pink piles will soon be ore Anyone have suggestions on what I could waterproof this thing with? Polyurethane? Resin? more soon

I took the ship outside today for some better pics, added the depth markings using dry transfer decals and made a few exhaust details Comparison Front Superstructure looks better in light

Re: 1/87 General Cargo Ship Build |

Fliger, I just read an article about the Savanna in Soundings, sort of a sad story
Anyway, the hull is 12 coats of paper mache (I make it with water, flour, and salt) over a stacked cardboard frame. Sanded in between every two coats, then 10 coats of colonial red rustoleum
Soon I will put one layer of fiberglass resin over it as a waterproof sealant
biggles, yes the hull is paper mache (I wouldn't recommend it!)
I think I'll switch to fiberglass over a foam frame for the next model, (thinking a much, much bigger one)
Another update soon

Didn't know you made the hull of papier-mache - good job! Filling and patching could be awkward to impossible at this stage. Maybe on your next project?

When I was a kid in the 50's I remember an article about building the Savanna in Popular Science, suing water glass and News paper. Could you tell me a bit about how you built the hull? over a form?
Cheers. Tom

Update, I started on railings which I initially thought I would 3d print, but I found this material called hardware cloth which I found I could make many things out of like railings, ladders, and other stuff Hardware cloth Installed some details on the cranes before painting Painted details (tape holds the ladder on while drying) Railings dry fitted before painting set on the superstructure Lifeboats with 4 coats ready for details

biggles,
the hull, I did notice that it is uneven in several places, I think a paper mache construction was not the wisest decision
Next time, I will choose fiberglass as I plan larger models in the future...
as for the bridge and superstructure, this was my first time working with styrene (I am a true newb!)
so imperfections are frequent
what could I use as a filler? milliput?
Ive been working on it a lot today, many details are being added

what did you notice needs filling and smoothing? maybe I can fix it! [/quote] Well, the hull seems to have an uneven-ness, or depression, in areas, especially on port side. The sections and walls of the bridge and superstructure could use some trimming to even up sides, and filling of joints, etc. But that's just me!

biggles, as I said, this is my first model that is not a kit, so I still am learning techniques and methods what did you notice needs filling and smoothing? maybe I can fix it! I plan to make it a seafaring ship, but it will probably have a place on my HO railroad

That's an ambitiously-sized model! But why have you painted and decorated parts that still need work, like levelling, filling, smoothing, etc. ? Is it for an HO scale RR?
