Well, first off, diesels have more of a blueish/gray sort of smoke, depending on their state of repair. Any good model railroad shop would carry smoke generators for model trains. The scale of the model ship would dictate the scale of the smoke gen. Many have fans in them that push smoke up and out, so the unit could easily be located at the base of a funnel. The only downside is that the smoke gen. makes heat that might warp plastic.....best of luck

Hi guys

just looking for a good smoke unit. There is plenty out but I did not find anything providing black smoke like for diesel engines. Any clues?

cheers
