This should be moved to amphibious and transports. It is not an aircraft carrier and does not deserve the status.

Second is a paper version. Haven't measured it so no idea of scale:

I see that it says it's an Amphibious Assault Ship - words which were never uttered on board. Her humanitarian capabilities were the ones highlighted. Even when I was talking to the gunners, they were keen to state that they would never be used because of the humanitarian tasks it will be undertaking. It was interesting to note there were no Phalanx installed on her.

Do I have to do a build log for this one?

HMAS Adelaide visited the port of Adelaide over the last few days and they had an open day yesterday.

They were giving away 2 models of her so I took one of each.

First is a foam rendition and, at about about 11.7cm, is in about 1/1974 scale:

It would be even better if they were doing it in 1/350 although a resin version would cost a small fortune.

cheers,

Out of interest, I have just finished converting the Orange Hobby Juan Carlos and have sent them a pic and they are now going to be doing the Canberra class as a model. :woo_hoo:

It's been a busy weekend on this. Cleaned parts, and done a rough paint.

Also removed radar tower, and made some modifications.

The little platform/crane addition to the front of the tower is the one that's kept me busy. Got it done, and am very happy (that it's done and to an acceptable standard).

More to come :wave_1:

I bought the Orange Hobby Juan Carlos I 1/700.

With some simple modifications to the radar towers etc, an additional observation deck to the control tower, and some change in decals (which I have yet to work out), I'll have my very own HMAS Canberra LHD 1/700 model.

I also bought some SH-60s, Chinooks, to go with the NH90s that come with the kit. The kit also came with Harriers, which the RAAF and RAN do not operate. So I bought some F-35s instead (I think it's going to happen!).

Anyway, here some pics. A very detailed model, that comes with some very nice photo-etch for both the ship and the aircraft.

I'm just about to start building the a 1/700 HMAS Canberra III using the Orange Hobby kit for the Juan Carlos I.

It all looks fairly straight forward, as the ships are *almost* identical, with a few changes to the radar towers being the biggest difference.....

However, my one challenge is the decals. I want to mark the deck exactly like the HMAS Canberra, but the decals that come with the Juan Carlos will not achieve this (missing a long straight line or two).

Does anyone have any tips or ideas on either:
1. Where I can get generic 1/700 decals for an aircraft carrier; OR
2. Somehow create my own decals and/or paint the deck myself.

Any advice, tips, or tricks would be appreciated.

A notable repost, considering that CANBERRA is nearing the end of its sea trials:

Hi Mick

I didn't realise that you were interested in building a model of the new LDH. I have some general arrangement drawings that you may be interested in looking at for the LHD. Let me know when you are coming to Wagga Wagga next and I will dig these drawings out. I have made a start on a 1:350 hull for one of these.

An update on soon-to-be HMAS Adelaide, the 2nd of the Canberra class LHDs being built.

Image

From DEFENSE INDUSTRY DAILY:

Quote:
LHD02 Adelaide arrives in Australia, as LHD01 Canberra preps for sea trials

Feb 7/14: LHD02 arrives. The heavy-lift ship MV Blue Marlin is back in Australia with another LHD hull, after a 10,000 nmi journey that took 8 weeks.

LHD02 Adelaide arrives in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne, and will be taken to the Patrick Webb Dock for removal of the sea fastenings and unloading. A tugboat with take her to the Williamstown dockyard in the suburbs for superstructure and fit-out work, and the hull is expected to be there within a week.

Things will be busy in Williamstown. LHD01 Canberra arrived back on Oct 17/12, and sea trials will begin within a few weeks. Sources: Australia DoD, “Landing Helicopter Dock Ship arrives in Melbourne” | Australia Defence, “Second LHD dock arrives in Australia”.

Plus another belated update from last May on the class leader Canberra, at the link below; take note that this ship's first CO or "plankowner "captain will be Jonathan Sadlier, one of the many transferred personnel from the Royal Canadian Navy.

ozpirate if you look at this site FreeTime Hobbies, you can find a 1/700 of a New company Orange Hobby.

They are a Chinese company that has made a resin kit of the Spanish LHD Juan Carlos I, which is the same design of your HMAS Canberra kit. The only thing is that thing is that it has decals for the Spanish ship, not Australia, sorry Mate.

But it is a great ship and a Great company... they are even getting ready to have a kit of HMS Hermes in Falklands fit. Check it out.

The Australian Government has approved a AU$3 billion project to build two LHDs, which will have air support, amphibious assault, transport and command centre roles. They are planned to replace in turn HMAS Tobruk and one of the RAN's two current Kanimbla class vessels. On 20 January 2006, it was announced that the two ships would be named HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide. The ships are due to enter service from 2013
The design was based on the Spanish Buque de Proyección Estratégica design, proposed by the Spanish company Navantia.

My question is, does anyone know of any plans available for these ships? (The Australian one that is) Or do I have to work on simple drawings and enlarge them?

This is for a future project.
I would build in scale 1/72 making it quite large model.
