They would be useful if they didn't have that big logo in the middle completely obscuring the picture.

What a great idea for a diorama. I hope you post pics or a gallery when done.

Hi Dan,

Great! Many many thanks your message and the information. :thumbs_up_1:

This photo is great and I was motivated to duplicate it in a small 1/700 diorama. Checking my stash I found that I had all players. I was afraid about Minesweeper #22, but found that a twin is part of a small Tamiya kit named "WWII Japanese Navy Auxiliary Vessels" (reference 31519). I started with Isokaze, backdating the new Fujimi kit, and had the doubt above when checking the photo. Now I have a clear picture. :woo_hoo:

Best regards,

Paulo Roberto

You are correct. :thumbs_up_1:

I posted this on a discussion thread on J-ships many years ago.

Btw, it's Michishio next to Sanyo Maru.

Hi,

A question for the Imperial Navy experts concerning the lovely photo above with Akashi and its charges at Truk.

The question relates to Isokaze, the destroyer tied up to Akashi's right side.

Isokaze Trom at Nihon Kaigun page states:

http://www.combinedfleet.com/isokaz_t.htm

7 February:
Troop evacuation run to Russell Islands (cover). Medium damage: in air attacks on 8 February; bow bracketed by two close near-misses; ten dead.

8-9 February:
Steamed from Shortlands to Rabaul; then repairs.

27 February-2 March:
Steamed from Rabaul to Truk; then more repairs.

My question concerns the destroyer bow 12,7 cm turret. Is it missing? Is it the object resting on the Akashi deck? See photo below.

Best regards,

Paulo Roberto

Like most navies, the Japanese were very concerned with the potential impact of magnetic mines. So, there was a push on in the six month run-up to war to equip their ships with cables. As a rule, they mounted then as high on the outboard of the hull as possible, making allowances for sponsons and the like.

Quote:
degaussing cables don't have to be on the hull sides as could be on the deck edge along side the hull or could be inside the hull so not visible on pictures.

Quite true but, as far as I know, the Japanese practice was to mount them on the outside of the hull. I can't think of a deck mounted example.

The Japanese realized by mid-war that their cables were not particularly effective, but in most cases (not all), kept the cables on.

Truthfully, there is no clear evidence as whether or not she wore a degaussing cable. Akashi was a very important auxiliary to the IJN, so the addition of a cable is not unreasonable.

The photographs you provided is very lovely especially the colored one. Thank you!

When does the Navy require degaussing cable? I know their purpose is to remove the magnetic field so in order to not attract the ships from mines and torpedoes but since not all ships use them is there like a pattern for those that use?

Hi everyone I'm starting to research on the Japanese Repair Ship Akashi over the internet but unfortunately I only see a few picture and references for this model.

One of the questions I want to ask for this model and in general is does this ship have degaussing cables added in the hull? When looking at the picture, I noticed that there is no noticeable Degaussing cable added. When does ship generally add degaussing cable to them? any specificity on when they use it?

If the members have more information about the ship (And pictures also) it will be a great help to the build. Thank you :)
