The printer has it as USN Type H Motor Surfboat. The ship in question would the USS Sullivans or any first batch square bridge Fletcher. My reference says it carried the Mark I Whale Boats with what was described as similar to the Mk II with a narrower engine. The Mk II Whale Boats are fairly easy to spot from the exhaust panels on each side.

I guessing these would be the MK I or early Whale Boats. Mainly because it doesn't have the "T" exhaust and general internal layout and planking:

The Navy tended to keep using small boats until they had to be replaced, so older ships had older types of motor whale boats. Newer construction got newer types of boats - maybe. When wartime construction ramped up, and parts were scarce, shipyards often used whatever they had laying around. Newer ships might get older boats. This practice continued through the Vietnam era.

You need to find photos of the ships boats you want to odel to determine what Mark/Mod they were (and this isn't always easy to determine because motor whaleboats look like motor whaleboats).

If you want detailed drawings (construction blueprints) of several different types of motor whale boats look at this post:

This Vietnam era, but I think is overlaps WWII for USN Boats.

Was there much variation in USN 26' Whale Boats used in WW2? Are there any good references, I've searched but haven't come up with much. I ordered a USN 26' Type H Motor Surfboat in 72nd as a small project to build.

Thanks,
Jim

Practice differs depending on ship and exact timeframe, so it's best to ask your question in the thread for the ship the boat is on.

I'm not sure if I am posting this right but I am stumped. Been searching through photos and such to determine what to paint the small boats that were on a battle ship. So now I have turned to the ones I am sure know or at least can point me in the right direction. Currently working on US Pacific ship during WW2.
