Great build of Hermes! I am writing a new book in the Shipcraft Series on RN Carriers, and would be interested in including photos of your build in the Modeller's Showcase section. If you are interested you can contact me directly at r2brown@shaw.ca. many thanks

Thank you Jim! Also thank you for the advice and tips you gave me. :wave_1:

Thank you Mike! To answer your question, I usually airbrush the base coat. In this case the light grey (507C), the flight deck, the hull red, boot topping, and base paint of the planes (Sky Grey) were airbrushed. Everything else is painted with a brush. For brushes I use Winsor & Newton Series 7. You can really feel the difference in using quality brushes.

It is nice to see this sharp and crisp model in brighter lit photos

I saw the real thing at Telford and the light was quite poor-so it was hard to discern just how nice this ship actually was...

.....and ..==> it is very sharp indeed !!

Erik:

Just wonderful!!!

May I ask if you airbrushed or hand brush-painted the model?

Please advise.

Thanks!

Mike E.

thank you for your comment pascalemod :wave_1:

Oh no, don't get me wrong! it is a excellent quality kit. I was just mentioning that there is room for improvement (as everything) and that the build felt more complicated than normal. The fit is great and the parts are nicely detailed. I have built the Chung King (ex-HMS Aurora) from Flyhawk and that is also a very nice kit.

The un-crispness of the bow can be because I filled up all portholes and sanded the "visors"/rain covers off, since they were oval shaped in the kit. I replaced them with PE portholes. I might have also used too much primer in the bow...

lovely build, and the tea bag idea is great one!

btw, you are saying it is a poor quality kit? Flyhawks experience for me has been very good so far (U47, USS Ward, HMS PoW). So you say its not that good as those? Fit issues, details? The bow plating does not look crisp, I can see that...

Hello everyone,

Long time no post. This is the Flyhawk HMS Hermes in 1/700 scale. The kit is really something but there are parts where it can be improved. The safety nets were redone with wire and that fine mesh that comes with fancy teabags. The planes are from l'Arsenal and are rigged with Modelkasten wire. The guns are PE and resin from Flyhawk and the quad-pompom is 3dModelparts with extra PE. Rigging is done with the elastic thread from Uschi vdR and Modelkasten wire. It is painted using paint and the new guide from Sovereign Hobbies. There is also some light weathering using oils. It was a very fun build but these Flyhawk kits are getting very complicated. I really enjoyed building the airplanes, they were a real challenge! Sorry for not posting a complete WIP, but I did not have any good photos for it. I will try to have better ones for my next build.

Special thanks to Graham Boak and iangazeley for their information and insights on the Swordish scheme.
