I have a Reynolds "History of the USN" Published in 1919 and there are photos taken of TONAPAH in 1918-19 and she was in a solid "war" grey. So, this scheme didn't last long.

I wonder how long it took them to realize that all of those pretty diamonds all blended together at distance and didn't really hide anything. You gotta love early warship camo. Some wacky designs indeed.

A photo from Charleston Navy Yard NPS Park photo collection. TONAPAH served as a Submarine Tender at Boston Navy Yard during WWI.

I can see how "happy" the crew would be in maintaining this scheme. They painted the anchor too.
