You'd have to ask Randy or John. I know randy has said there were different formulas but I never saw any documentation that explained anything like that at Archives.

I guess what Mgunns question is really asking, is where does Snyder & Short's paint chips indicating the existence of 5-S A, B, and C variants come from and do we know when they were applied, if ever?

Measure 11 is 5-S Sea Blue. If they had wanted a different formula used, it would be specified. None of the documentation I've seen ever mentioned an A, B, or C.

Now, one thing that did happen (and is in line with my statement is that both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets used Measure 11 (Pacific) and 12 (Atlantic) but modified it by substituting 5-N Navy Blue for the original 5-S Sea Blue. In the case of Measure 11 with 5-N, this is effectively Measure 21 before it was Measure 21.

Atlantic Fleet -
Low Visibility Painting of all Ships slated to Join the Atlantic Fleet - December 13, 1941
Surface ships (except hospital ships and CONSTELLATION) -measure 12, using Navy Blue, 5-N paint, in lieu of Sea Blue, 5-S paint.
Pacific Fleet -
Painting of Ships - December 16, 1941.
Surface ships, less carriers - Measure 11 except that "Navy Blue", formula 5-N will be used in place of "Sea Blue", formula 5-S.

Measure 11 5S, which one; A, B, or C or any of them?

Color question: Measure 11 calls Sea Blue 5S, there is no alpha designator after "S". There is 5S-A, B and C. Each one is different. So when the Ships 2, Vol. 1 calls for sea blue 5S for Measure 11, does it imply any one of three variations can be used, or more specifically was only one designated?
