Greetings!
Just completed build of the Revell 1/487 scale USS Yorktown CV5 circa 1939. Included in the build:
Gold Medal Models PE set
Model Monkey Yorktown island modified to 1939 appearance
Starfighter 5" guns
Trumpeter 1/350 F2F's cut down and modified to 1/487 SBC Scout Bombers
Various styrene sheet, tubes, rods, and strips
Various spare photoetch items
Caenis 2 denier thread for rigging
Many hours of tedious work
I wanted a pre-war (1938/1939) Yorktown with a stained wood deck and yellow wing aircraft. This involved many scratch built details and modifications to various parts. Aircraft were a major challenge - I ended up modifying the kit aircraft to look like TBD Devastators and used greatly cut down and modified Trumpeter 1/350 scale F2Fs to look like 1/487 scale SBC scout bombers. Not perfect, but I am satisfied with the result. Model Monkey island is excellent, but needed to be very carefully modified to reflect the 1939 appearance. The kit hull and flight deck are well done and only need some minor work. Decals for the aircraft were a challenge and most came from spares bin. Rigging was difficult due to very thin Caenis thread and old eyes. Paints include Tamiya and Mr. Color. Deck finished with Derwent water colour pencils applied dry and rubbed in to the acrylic base color paint.
Thanks for having a look. Questions and comments always welcome.
