The overhead views posted by MartinJQuinn are the best I've ever seen for HMT Queen Elizabeth with regards to her weapons fit as a troopship. Is there a similar diagram for HMT QE indicating which weapons and directors are used in which positions?

I have the Anatomy of the Ship volume on the Queen Mary which has drawings of the ship's weapons arrangement as a troopship. Something similar would be perfect. Even some paragraphs of text or a annotated picture giving this information would be great.

Hi Peter -

You should pick up a copy of "Queen Elizabeth at War" by Chris Konings.

While not as detailed as the AOTS books from a modeling perspective, the photo-coverage is pretty good, and a good start for pulling together her armament fits. Keep in mind that armament on both QM and QE increased throughout the war so you'll want to pick a speciffic period to model.

I'm looking for information on the armament fitted to the QE when she was used as a troop ship. The Anatomy of the Ship volume on the Queen Mary has a drawing of the armament she carried, but I have not been able to find information for the QE.

Have been studying QM photos in the latest update


... and noted that the raised rails atop the wooden taffrail appear to have been fitted

' in-period ' on QE as well...


any ideas when these were fitted?--tough to do in 1/600 / 700.... :big_grin:

why are you wasting time to ruin what looks like a fair start to your QE with the dreadful Airfix Davits...

Do you not have the specific Photpetch set from White Ensign Models...?

The davits fold up and make a pretty good representation of the real thing--with the gap in the girders.

WEM ships its own products post free ....

Be careful, a few of the details you highlighted were just there because of the ship serving as a troopship.

Funnel colour, I prefer Cunard ORANGE ~ I mixed my colour from 1 blob Humbrol #153 plus three or four blobs of Humbrol #154. You should achieve a colour that matches today's basketball (ball) colour (but not pumpkin, in this case you might have too much yellow in it).

At least since 1986 the colour shifted to a flat red, maybe first on QE2's 'fat' funnel during the 1986/87 refit at Bremerhaven.

Hi there -

The deckhouse on RMS Queen Elizabeth was two decks high, and contained a lot of open area for the high ceilings of the major public rooms which were accessed from the Promenade deck below. First class Smoke Room, Salon, Lounge, Main Hall were all located on the Prom. Deck, and were 2 or 3 decks high. The deck house also contained a small number of 1st class cabins, officers' and engineers' quarters, gymnasium, squash courts, etc.

When built RMS Queen Elizabeth had conventional bilge keels, like most liners, which she retained for the life of the ship. The retractable stabilizers were added in 1955, when the technology became available, and the offset of the stabilizers on the Airfix kit is correct as they were retrofitted into existing spaces within the ship which were not symmetrical port and starboard.
