A Royal Navy destroyer that has been tasked to deploy to the Mediterranean amid growing tensions with Russia has been delayed again, almost a week after it was initially scheduled to depart the UK.

HMS Diamond was initially due to leave its home base of Portsmouth on February 17, but its departure was first delayed due to Storm Eunice.

Then on Monday, a Ministry of Defence spokesperson confirmed the destroyer required �minor repairs� due to a defect on board.

She was then scheduled to leave Portsmouth on Wednesday morning, however remains alongside.

UK hires team to stop destroyers from breaking down at sea

LONDON � An industry team led by BAE Systems has secured a �160 million (U.S. $224 million) deal with the British Ministry of Defence to help fix long-running propulsion problems that have blighted the reliability of the Royal Navy�s Type 45 destroyer fleet.

BAE, along with partners BMT Defence Services and Cammell Laird, are to undertake what the MoD calls the power improvement project, or PIP, which principally will see the anti-air warships� two existing diesel generators replaced with three larger units.

The warships have suffered a number of embarrassing breakdowns at sea due to problems with the propulsion system during operations in high temperatures, undermining confidence in the reliability of the six destroyers.

Apparently new diesels are to be fitted from next year and the WR21s with be relegated to providing "boost".

Hi heard that some reckon she may have struck something with the propeller.

I am friends with an engineer from the design team. The power system issues, he says, are down to a usage pattern which isn't reflective of the basis of design in the specification they were given. i.e. they are running the back up diesels full time - they were never intended for that.

One of Britain�s most advanced warships has aborted a mission to the Gulf and is heading home after breaking down, The Times can reveal.

HMS Diamond, a �1 billion Type 45 destroyer, had problems with a propeller that could not be fixed at sea despite the efforts of sailors on board.

It is the latest debacle to beset the Royal Navy�s fleet of six destroyers, built by BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce, which started entering service eight years ago.
