Calling all NS Savannah fans!

by NelstoneB » Sun Jun 17, 2018 3:40 pm

Dear Folks,

I brought the NS-1 to Rocky Mount, North Carolina, USA, on Saturday 16 Jun for ops with several other NC Captains. Here is a link to that topic:

I need to create molds for several 3D printed parts recently obtained.

Sincerely,
Nelson

Would love to see some more photos of your achievement, Nelson!

Dear Folks,

Within the past year I have spoken to two individuals who wanted NS-1 models in other scales than 1/96. I understand that this Forum is mainly for smaller models, so is there sufficient interest in, say, 1/350 for me to develop a resin kit? Who could do the PE for such a project?

Sincerely,
Nelson

Dear Folks,

I appear to be well. Still looking for a replacement truck. The portholes and windows have been cut out from the hull:

While removing material from the Bridge Island to lighten it, I opened up the Bridge windows:

The kit buyer may want to do this as the basic resin parts are relatively heavy and rest on top. Overall weight with ballast should be around 45 lbs. Work on the superstructure continues as I check parts for fit and correlation. I have found the Bridge Deck needed support underneath, so I arranged the pieces to match the floor plan. Illuminating the rooms will be more realistic that way. So far I have found only small tweaks to improve assembly by people not as familiar with the ship as I have become. During my latest visit I located deck lighting, and will include that info in the instructions. She should shine brightly with everything lit up.

Sincerely,
Nelson

It fits perfectly in the 6'-5" bed of my 1999 Ford F-150, which was rear-ended in Maryland on my way home. I now have to obtain another F-150, so that the ships will still fit. Delicate items rest in the Cab.

Dear Nelson,

Hope you are well and not injured. Rear enders are annoying. Good luck with your new vehicle - sounds like bed is good protection for the models.

Sincerely,

Paul

Okay, this should work better. I live in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. Where are you?

That would be really helpful! However you posted as a guest and I can't contact you through PM or email :(. I'd really like to take a look at those drawings so hopefully I'll be able to contact you :).

I began working from that PDF, and found some errors, notably porthole locations. I have been provided files by the MARAD Rep, and have a 1/96 scale plug constructed. In the process I created highly accurate CAD files which I may provide for your 1/150 model. Please contact me via email to discuss.

Hi guys,

Gosh this is an old thread! I'm doing a commission model of Savannah at 1:150 - can anyone tell me where I might find a good source of plans? I've found a few online but they don't strike me as being very good. Can anyone help?

Will.

Dear Doug,

You're welcome. I may document the Build in the Online Scratchbuild Projects. Right now I have a Build thread on Warship Models Underway. For simplicity, I may restrict posts to one website. I administer Capital Model Boat Association, a Board for general R/C boating in Raleigh, NC, USA.

http://www.capitalmba.com/forum/index.php (This site was deleted due to not maintaining the domain name)

I may post there to generate more interest in the Hobby in Raleigh. Further posts in this Thread about a Build would be inappropriate. Three duplicate threads is, well, redundant.

Sincerely,
Nelson

Thanks for posting! I have been a fan of the ship, and hadn't heard good news for a while. Good to see that she is being saved, last I read was not as hopeful. :woo_hoo:

Cheers

Dear Folks,

I have begun a Build thread for a 1/96 scale R/C model in the Warship Models Underway Board, Civilian Build Board subtopic. Laser-cut 3mm plywood will form the structure for the plug. I intend to cast fiberglass hulls and fittings eventually.

Sincerely,
Nelson
