Actually I am restoring this model.
It seems to have been built in the 1930's to promote Italian Mare nostrum ideals. It was sent for an Expo to the US . Most of the small detail and accessories were stolen along thr years .Finally it ended on ebay by a private owner in Auatralia.Fort Rinella Heritge Trust bought it. Virtu ferries happened to be taking delivery of a catamaran from Australia to Malta which also delivered the five foot model of the Duilio.
The model was in a sorry state and needed many replacment parts. I was approached to restore the model to which I was highly enthusiastic.

A great set of plans in 1/100 were purchased from Germany.

This particular ship has special connection to Malta and the FWA Fort Rinella heritage trust. Two Forts in Malta Fort Rinella and Fort Cambridge were constucted in 1884 to house the 100 ton gun as used by the Duilio and the sister ship Dandalo along with other Guns in Gibraltar.

Duillio is always an interesting ship to study...

I was in Malta last year and among other things visited Fort Rinella, and met smoe of the IPMS chaps...

Hi David Welcome This is a superb subject and one seldom built . I rememebr seeing Brian King's 1:96 Duilio at the Model Engineering exhibition in the UK some 7 years ago .a truly superb model but at that time not quite finished as I recall .

Yes I have seen the model by King in his book Victorian battleships.

Jim are there two models of the Duilio in Venice one cross section and another one with the green hull .

This looks like an extremely well-made model and worthwhile restoration project. Looking forward to watch the progress.

Incidentally, a German colleague of mine has been working on a similar (civilian) project for a couple of years now and really did a wonderful job to restore the model to its former glory: http://www.u-boot-net.de/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1435. If there is good substance all the effort will be worthwhile.
