This is a quick and dirty sub-assembly build, slated to be mounted on a Kriegsmarine R-boat (kitbashed from an AIRFIX S-boat).

That's gonna take awhile, so in the interim I'm going for completing the low-hanging fruit.
It's not meant to be a super-detailed build, so there'll be no additional photo-etching or insane detailing work.

The 'deck' is an aluminum screened porch vent surplus from a home project.

For excessive details on the L/56 Bofors at sea, see
http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_4cm-56_mk12.php

The gun kit is from the AIRFIX offering.

The base is a stub casing (from the era of trench art ash trays). Image

After a bath in white vinegar, it got some elbow grease and Brasso.

Stampings seem to indicate that it's a February 1943 Navy contract (little anchor) vintage case made by Lyon, Inc. of Detroit, Michigan (triangle L) for a Mk 1 Bofors (the aircooled L/56 that they mounted later in the war on PT boats as Jap barge busters).

Nice.

The 1955 lot number, might be a date on the casing that would indicate it was repurposed, possibly cut down and used as a mortar charge, which was a common practice in the 50's to save money on brass. I know it was done for Squid and Limbo A/S mortars.

"First to Fight" makes a very detailed 1/72 plastic Bofors.

Interesting theory, but when compared to other Mk I cases with the lot # in the same location, ;1955' is in fact a lot number and not a date.

The 40mm Bofors round is a fixed piece of ammunition, with the powder charge inside a bottle necked brass case.

Mortar rounds consist of the projectile propelled by varying amounts of propellant rings (known as 'cheese' from their shape). No brass casing involved.

True enough, but the detail level of the AIRFIX Bofors matches the detail level of the AIRFIX S-Boat I'm working on.

Is this a scratch build project?

Dear Mr Story,
I do not wish to hijack your build thread, so here is a link to help explain my reference to A/S Mortars and repurposed casings, not to be confused with Army mortars.
I thought at first that maybe your stand could be one, but I no longer believe that to be the case (no pun intended). I hope that you find this informative.

Also, the question above regarding scratchbuilding is simply asking if you made the parts from scratch(raw materials, pieces you made by yourself), or is the gun from a kit that you purchased? The poster obviously didn't see the airfix kit image you included in the original post.

Regards,
Darren

The poster did see the "kit". The question was a subtile way to ask if perhaps another forum might have a better audience! This is a scratch and not a kit bash area.

Best wishes: Tom

Sorry Tom, no disrespect intended.

No worries! Perhaps a better audience in "Picture Post, WIP". Lots of creative work modifying kits over there, including Willie's and Hank's Fletchers. Building a lot of scratch stuff on a kit canvas.

Cheers: Tom

Darren,

Threads like these are meant to inspire and educate, so meandering thoughts are far from hijacking.

Thanks for the edification, A/S mortars are not a rabbit hole I've been down before.

Tom,

Note that EnglishGunner used a Shapeways deck gun that I sourced for him.

This thread is a scratchbuild presentation, since the original manufacturers of the Bofors case and window vent never intended them to be a nautical themed display base.
