I love those miniature projects.

Yes, you are right, at some stage the model really becomes too fragile to handle and to attach to its base, so it has to be mounted much earlier than one would do it intuitively. On the other hand, it also becomes less accessible from certain angles due to the comparatively wide base. There are always trade-offs in life. I will have to do the same soon for my current project.

How do you attach the model to the base ? A screw from below ?

It would be interesting to see your carved see, before it is painted.

A frame with a busy wood-grain can visually distract from the model, but in this case the light wood sort of evokes the idea of coral sand beaches and coral reefs :thumbs_up_1:

excellent works Joseph! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

The colourings of the hull are subtle and complimentary!

As a woodworker. I do enjoy the color and textures available in natural woods. The base is quite nice indeed. "Speedbird" is of course the callsign for British Airways. Any association there?

Very nice so far, rigging should be fun at this scale, though not as much as "ship in bottle" standards.

BTW, I like your treatment of the sea. It is among the best that I have seen !

When you say 'braided' wire, I suppose you mean wires twisted together, not braided like a girl's tail ?

I found it rather difficult to twist more than two wires together, as the tension on all strands has to be absolutely equal, otherwise the 'rope' does not develop evenly. In rope-making the strands can move against each other, but when you twist wires, they kind of lock into each other and minor differences in length or tension results in bulging of the respective strand. What's your set-up for this ?
