Hello all


here are some in-build photos of my 1:25 model of the MONITOR

I have built this model using the 1:100 plans of Ingo Oses--they are
not particularly well detailed--therfore I have spent a lot of time
re-drawing and examining photos and pictures

here the rudder is covered with glassfibre, undercoated and 'rivetted' with rivets made in home-made rivetmaking machine

the first of the rivets being applied-in total there were overe a
thousand rivtes...!!



My rivetmaking punch--not fully developed-but it makes nice 3.2mm rivets
and they are solighly domed too!!

ah--thats better now -- a stunning 43 Kilogramms of ballast(!!!)
about 90 lbs

I have not progressed very much further--as I (to my folly!) chose to
start turning modelgunbarrels in brass for other modellers...

Awe-inspiring! Early ironclads like this are among my favourite subjects, I've seen many scratchbuilt models of the Monitor but none as large as this.
The metal rivets look very convincing; I'd never have thought of making them like this.

From the angled armour on the pilothouse and the awning supports on the turret, I assume you're building the ship in its later, post-Hampton Roads configuration?

Another couple of questions, hope this is OK:
- Will the model be driven by electric or steam? (With a ship as large and relatively simple as this, steam propulsion would be much easier to do Though the lack of a funnel/stack might create problems with draught)
- Will it have rotating turret or black powder "firing" guns?

what exactly is that punch your using for the rivets? i've got an ironclad i'm going to build that that would be phenomonal if i could have rivets!

Thank you for your interest in my model

The model will be electrically propelled--as yet(!)-I have no
experience with steam

It will bepowered with a 900 motor, and I intend to have the turret
capable of being trained. They will be non-firing guns--too much
trouble with the authorities here in Germany...(!).

The available plan has dictated the timeframe of the model-according to
my research it will be the later version

My model will also carry a funnel--as did the real ship when she went down!

A 'steam generator' will be installed--that will by means of a 'hot'wire will cause hay to smoulder--this glowing will be maintained by means of a small electrically driven fan

I shall probably not get to see the Monitor. Perhaps I shall make a trip
to England some day-but the USA is a bit far at the moment...!

Thank you for your interest in my model and the rivetmaker

The machine works like a normal holepunch,apart from the fact that the
holes are not actually cut--but rather 'pushed'...-this results in the
tin plate being formed into a domed shape befor the edges are finally cut

I have made a number of prototype machines--and am currently designing
a new cutter that will make it easier to use.I intend to manufacture
these units for sale to fellow modelmakers.
The function and concept of the current machine is fine--but it all
takes too much effort at the moment....

i'm getting ready to build a monitor, as someone gave me a fiberglass hull as a gift.... i'm not sure what scale it is yet, but i was wondering if you could price a rivet maker for me?

Put me on your list foir a rivet maker! Also, if I may, provide different sized rivet head puches for various scales of rivet heads with your machine. I prefer 1/192 scale.

Hi all!

the rivetmaker is progressing well.

however..--please supply the diameter of the rivets you
require--rather than the scale--that way I can see if the dies will
punch and form your desired size rivet!

More progress soon on the machine
