Always an interesting subject, Wire Cable Reels - usually the kits either don't have them designed correctly or the detail is awful. So, I spent this evening designing one and will print it in various scales - 1/48, 1/96, 1/144, and 1/200 just to see how much detail comes on in each size. Here are a couple design shots of the part:

This design is based mainly on the 1/48 scaled drawing in the MISSOUR Plan Book and a photo of one on board USS NORTH CAROLINA. Another mini project but one that has intriqued me for some time as these are not simple pieces of deck gear but rather complicated mechanisms. I'm also currently printing a 1/48 3D design/printed BB-55 class boat crane which is in the latter stages of printing and assembly - a subject for another topic, to be sure.

Today's print run was not so successful. I printed (2) each in the scales 1/48, 1/96, 1/144, 1/200, and 1/350. The only ones that came out completely were the (2) in 1/96 scale -
Attachment:

The others came out with incomplete reels and I think this was due to the thickness (or lack thereof) of the round reel ends and the orientation of the part on the build platform. So, tonight I will go and correct the thickness and then orient differently for the 2nd print run. FYI - the 1/350 scale actually DID print - but was sort of distorted - perhaps this correction may actually produce a useful part!! We shall see

I also may begin separating the reel from the stand in order to print a 1/24 scale display model. I may also do this for the 1/48 scale unit, as well.

Hank,

Fascinating - Some of the designs I've done up for my Bonnie have been based around 1/96 scale, whilst factoring in the print capability of the FDM printer I use. 0.4mm wall thickness is a thing.

Nice job Hank, But I'm waiting for the first coat of primer to get a better look, black is black... :cool_1:

Navy Shooter - Yeah, I find this equipment interesting and quite "doable" as far as getting the details all in.

Pascal - Thanks! Yes, the black is hard to determine details, I took that photo just after removing the parts from the build platform. I may give them a shot of primer in a while and then see if they're "photo worthy" :doh_1:

Currently, I have a 1/24 scale, (2) 1/48 scale, and (2) 1/200 scale parts in the printer now. I did separate the reel from the stand and then created a separate axle in addition to beefing up the wall thickness of the reel, which was the part that failed (You've failed No. 2!!! - from the movie From Russia With Love).

Last night's print run went extremely well! Here are the parts after printing -
Attachment:

I was surprised that even the 1/200 scale reel parts printed completely! So, they are now drying and my next post will include the assembled reels & stands. The key here was to separate the parts and then make sure they had sufficient supports. I'm fairly confident that the 1/96 scaled items will print, but I don't really have a need for those at this time.

I painted & assembled the 1/24 scale cable reel & stand and here is the finished item -

I will create a wood deck for the display cube and mount the cable reel on the deck. The 1/48th scale & 1/200 scale parts are yet to be assembled. No great rush - I may use the 1/200 scaled parts to replace the kit items on my USS NEW JERSEY when I open the case later this year to do other 3D part replacements.

A fun and interesting little mini project.

Thanks, Pascal!!! Much appreciated. I'll post a final photo once the display cubes arrive and I get this whole thing assembled.

Hank:

Hi from New Zealand! I agree with Pascal that the primer helps us see what the print looks like. I love the detail of the Rapid black Resin but even with one in hand you can hardly tell what it looks like!

very nice, any lick with the near 1:192 sizes?

Cheers: Tom

Tom,

Crickey, you've gone Aussie on us!!!

Actually, the 1/200 DID print, but I haven't assembled them yet. I may do another run at 1:192 and see how those come out since modifying them somewhat prior to the last print run.

Enjoy your trip :thumbs_up_1:

Tom,

The 1/192 scaled cable reels DID print; here's a shot of them drying -

Tomorrow I'll attempt to assemble & paint!

I've modified the basic 1/48 scale design for the wider Hauser Reel & Stand and may do a 1/24 for display with the cable reel. That might look good!

I've now completed the 2nd Reel & Stand in 1/24 scale - this one a typical hawser reel. Here is a picture of both of the reels -

And in finishing, here's the steel cable reel in its display cube -

Once I have another 5" sq. cube in hand, the hawser reel will be thusly displayed, as well!

Tonight I finally got the Hawser Reel & Stand display finished -

This one took a bit longer due to the two sailor figurines being added.
