Thanks to several modelers' requests, 3D-printed parts are now available for those classic kits you have in your stash and you built as kids - and in the proper scale.

Just click on the scale you need on the left side of the page:
http://www.shapeways.com/shops/Model_Monkey

16"/50 cal. Triple Turrets (set of three), 5"/38 cal. Mk.28 Twin Mounts, Mk.37 Directors and Mk.56 Directors are now available for Revell's 1/535 scale USS New Jersey, USS Missouri and USS Wisconsin. These are suitable for Monogram's 1/545 USS Wisconsin

USS New Jersey's 1944 "Round Bridge" is available for Revell's 1/535 scale Iowa class models. It is suitable for Monogram's 1/545 USS New Jersey

5"/38 Single Mounts as well as Mk.37 Directors are now available for the classic Revell 1/426 scale USS Pine Island AV-12 Currituck class seaplane tender kit (both lightweight and heavyweight versions).

Mk.37 and Mk.56 Directors are available for Revell's 1/530 Essex class carriers.

Mk.37 and Mk.56 Directors are available for the classic Renwall 1/500 Essex class models, USS King, and Revell 1/500 USS Long Beach CG-9.

5"/38 Single Mounts are now available for the classic Revell 1/500 USS Long Beach CG-9 kit.

Mk.37 and Mk.56 directors are available for Revell's 1/320 scale Forrest Sherman class destroyers.

That's great stuff!
In addition to the 1/500 scale MK-56, have you considered 5-38 single enclosed mounts, ASROC launchers, or SPG-55 missile directors for the Revell
Long Beach?

Thanks, Paul!

I can have the 5"/38s ready any time one needs them. The barrels are not likely printable by Shapeways in that scale (too thin) but the gunhouses will look very good.

I'd like to design the ASROC launchers and SPG-55 directors for multiple scales for mid-late 2016 but have not yet done any research on those items.

A 5"/38 Twin Mount for the classic 1/285 Revell Wind class icebreaker/cutter USCGC Burton Island is available.

If you intend to backdate the kit to the World War II US service-appearance of one of the class, you may need two mounts. Consult your references to be sure.

You can now get other 3D-printed goodies for these same, wonderful, old kits from 3DModelparts.com:

The design for a set of four 1/720 scale HACS Mk.VI Directors is ready for the classic Revell HMS Ark Royal with Destroyer Escort Ashanti.

The set of four directors is also suitable for Revell's 1/720 HMS King George V (# H-380-3800) converted to HMS Anson.

The directors are for the Tribal class destroyer rather than Ark Royal.

Happy New Year!

Hi Steve,

Got the Pine Island guns and directors the other day and they are first rate....They really will make a difference to the overall appearance of the Pine Island. Thanks

Hey since you are doing things for the Revell Essex class is there anyway you could do the SPS-30 radar antenna? Once again the kit's part looks like a death ray gun from a Star Wars Evil Empire Destroyer...

Thanks so much!

I don't have much info on that radar. I would like to take a look.

Hi Steve,

What you did on your CG-10 Albany over on Secret Society Of Model Builders would be great. Both Revell and Renwall depicted this radar as a flat 2 dimensional part with just the antenna horn and no dish so it winds up looking like some sort of ray gun. Add in the chunky raised details that I think are supposed to represent some sort of lattice structure and you get a completely fictitious part.

There are some really good shots of the Essex class installation of the radar on the USS Hornet web site at http://www.usshornet-cv12.com/

Thanks again
Mark

Hi Mark!

Actually, that's not me, but a very talented modeler whose online nickname is nearly the same as my Shapeways store name (slightly different spelling). Regrettably, he hasn't posted in nearly a year. It would be great to see more of his work.

Having seen several photos of the SPS-30, technically, it is a reasonably simple design to do in CAD. What is needed is dimensions. In other words, how big is it? Any help is appreciated!

Can't remember exactly but I believe there are some drawings of the radar in Alan Raven's book on the Essex Class.

Yeah what he said. If it is the same man, Phillip Hayes PhD, who put together the okieboat site he has some great CAD drawings. I found them last night while searching for any article that would give overall "physical" dimensions....

I couldn't find anything on the actual dimensions but if all else fails I wonder if someone out there with a Gallery Models 1/350 CV-11 USS Intrepid kit could measure the SPS 30 parts (J3, J6, J7) in it and then you could rescale them to 1/500 and 1/535?

Steve, are you guys looking at putting out any more upgrades for the 1/535 Missouri? I have one in my stash and would love to find some nice upgrades for her. Mike.

Might have to go that route until some good plans surface. The good Doctor is looking for those plans himself.

I will rescale my large-scale (1/192 and 1/96) 16-inch triple turrets to 1/535. The design will need some tweaking to make printing work but it can be done. The New Jersey's "Round Bridge" will also be made available shortly.

Those 16" turrets look very nice. Any possibility of 20 and/or 40 mm AA guns?
