Here´s my escort carrier... A Casablanca class in 1/72.
I beggined 2 weeks ago...a long way to go yet !!!

Together with building a 1/72 Casablanca, I´m also working/drawing a set of plans for a Bogue/Ruler class Escort carrier...
Although I´ve got the main hull/deck lines, I´m still missing some important details... So my question is,does anybody out ther has some photos to show ??? Anykind ???

...Well, (and to start with...) I would really like to get some GOOD pictures of their islands... I believe this is one of the places were some differences existed between Bogues/UK_Bogues/Rulers...

It also depends WHEN you want to do it as there were changes made throughout their history. Speaking only of Bogue class, if you look at the 2nd & 3rd photos on Navsource's Bogue Page you can see that the outer surface of the island is somewhat rippled, but smooth (November 1942). Scroll down to number 12 or so (photo NS0300903, December 1945) and there is external ribbing PLUS extra support bracing underneath. No idea when that was added. I have access to lots of CVE records in Seattle but haven't had a chance to go through many of them to see what is actually there. It will mostly be textual records, not plans or photos. Stuff like officer lists, basic equipment, preservation work post war, etc. But there might be some nuggets.

Well I´ve got a couple of theories (Who doesn´t...)...I think that the external rippled look might come from different batches, within the same class, or even from different construction methods from different shipyards ( not sure for now where they were built...).
As for the extra bracing, that takes me to another question: Did the island had enough support ??? I think that the extra support bracing might come from a quick repair made at sea (remember that these ships suffered a lot of stress, out there on the ocean...), that probably was adopted for other ships, which might suffer from this same problem.
What do you think ???

The rippling is fairly common in lightweight structures and is caused by structural loads or temperature variations.

I don't think the bracing was added at sea... something like that is most likely done at a shipyard. I would imagine that when these ships reached the rough atlantic the crew began to notice cracks... these would have been brought to the attention of the bureau of contruction which would have designed the fix and issued it as an official "shipAlt" (alteration). I've seen TONS of shipalts in the Essex research I'm doing.

Port side yes. It's harder to get the starboard side since it's over the water.

'Cut out 1/72 CVE hull stations some years ago and never got joing on one. They're...somewhere. Best of fortune!

...Why don´t you go ou there, and try to find them ??? You´ve probably allready done a lot of work, and that would be a pity to lose...

Laziness, JM and too much else going to get into one more 'serious' endeavour, especially one over 7 feet long.

New topic: Any o' you hearties done a Commencement Bay class? They are abnormally s*xy and 'used one in first novel and well, where would one start for a build????

C'mon, you're smart and talented and hip folks...help, please.

There is a 1/700 scale Comm. Bay in the works by at least one company (in resin). ETA unknown, but in the distant future, not near. No other details.
