What additional changes are you going to incorporate into the Mo? She had some of her 20mm removed too didn't she? I thought I saw photos of her on the way back to the East coast with the triple 20 mm battery on the main deck aside of the #1 and #2 turrets removed. Do you know if anything else was changed beside the deck holystoning (sp?) and alteration of the Ms 22? Just curious. I hope you will post some of your photos.

I toured the Missouri at Pearl in 2000 and 2002 and can't wait to go back with my 8 year old son. I am hoping he will like the Iowa class ships and battleships like I do. I just wish I could have seen her before the modernization.

Hi Guys,
Seeling,
The Missouri was only minorly different from her Jan 45 refit when compared to the Missouri as she was October 27 45, (Navy Day). Here is what I know:
The 3 x 20mm's alongside turret 2 on the main deck were gone.
I had Tamiya mail a New Jersey foredeck to me and I used it with the L'Arsenal fordeck details removed and re-attached to my foredeck.
The way Missouri appeared paintwise differed a little:
1) Hull was entirely 5-N
2) 5"twin mount tops were no longer 20B, but haze grey
3) "Missouri" painted on the ships side..don't know for how long
4) The 16" barrels were a very light grey...almost freshly painted or a slightly different shade of haze grey
5) can't remember....
Pearl harbor you say?????
Image
My brother was there two weeks ago!!!
Did I go? NO, but he stayed on the phone with me all the while!!!
post pics? Heck yeh!
faithfully submitted, Tony Bunch

Well Bretheren, I had a little free time today and I decided to draw up one of the design sheets for a proposed camoflauge design for the Iowa class, so here it is:

I have higher resolution copies available upon request. I'm tempted to build me an Iowa in this scheme, it looks cool, and it's different.

Enjoy!

If I'm not mistaken, this was actually done prior to her stop in Pearl Harbor on the way to New York City. One of the photos in the Illustrated History of the Missouri shows her doing an underway replenishment during the war, and the tops of the 5" turrets clearly appear to be the same shade as the rest of the turret, i.e haze grey.

My Tamiya 1/350 depicts Missouri as she would have been in the July -August period, and so I have her in Ms 22, with the exception of the 5", as shown in that photo.

(But I DIDN'T do the passageway behind the bridge unfortunately!)

Hi Guys,
Tom,
You are correct, sir!
The pics I have studied of Missouri clearly show the 5" twin mounts without the 20b on the tops at some point in time near the wars' end.
I built my 700th Mo just this way, (even though the kit itself was actually closer to her original fit), but that's another story.
My description of the Mo as she apeared in October 1945 included this detail, as with a few others previously mentioned.
...almost ready to get back to my 350th Mo!

Nothing wrong with the Benjamin Stoddert! I have wanted to see her in 1/350 scale, but settled for Dragons.
(At least I got the full hull option) Starting my Missouri this week! :woo_hoo:

Hi Guys,
Hi Michael,
Which paint scheme will you choose for Missouri?
I have not had the nerve to do the Ms32 yet!
Very cool scheme.
Have you looked over all of the Missouri's in the gallery yet?
Special areas of the ship.....you need pics or suggestions..you get it here!
Welcome to the Iowa Fans Camp.
DDG-22?
I have finished her in 1/700 scale, (backdated to 1972), and I am currently building her in 1/96 scale.
Thanks to SailorBill..I am a DDG fan too! Thanks to you!
faithfully submitted, Tony Bunch
ps going to the IPMS Nationals next month...taking BB62 and DDG-22 along....

Hi Guys,
Michael,
The WEM 1/350 DDG-22 kit is still around. Contact WEM directly, or see if Bill at Pacific Front still has one.
It would be in her last fit, but backdating is quite doable.
If uou go to the forum>online scratchbuild projects section here, scroll down about halfway, and there is a thread entitled, "got my 1/96 CF Adams DDG". Check it out.
A little off topic, but I hope the Iowa Fans understand.
Dare I ask, when in 1945?
Tony

Hi guys,

Just got my Tamiya Missouri yesterday and was reviewing the paint options. I am going to paint mine measure 22 but the instructions say to paint the deck XF-50 with XF-2 (Field blue and Flat white) mixed. Is this correct? Also the hull AS-8? Navy Blue??? Any feedback would be helpful.

Michael

Hi Guys,
Michael,
First, did you get the DDG?
Second, you have numerous paint color mix combos or you can buy the CORRECT colors from other than Tamiya.
There is nothing wrong with Tamiya paints, but mixing to achieve what Testors Acryl or WEM offers, "right out of the bottle", makes little sense; especially when you consider having to re-mix a batch to match a previously mixed batch, and the fact that you'd have to buy twice as much paint product.
Testors Acryl paints are acrylic enamel and should be mixed with Testors Acryl thinner and cleaned with Testors Acryl Cleaner.
I'm not a chemist, but I'd imagine the majority of their thinner is water. In any case, it works! Anyway, WEM also offers exact , Oil based enamel), colors for USN WWII ships, (along with others), and their paint works well also. It seems to tak a while to dry, so you have to plan, "dry times". This is from MY experience, as I can't speak for anyone else.
5H Haze grey, 5N Navy blue and 20B deck blue are the Ms22 colors, and both Testors Acryl and WEM offers these.
my 2 cents...
Tony Bunch

Tony,

No nothing yet. Left them a email a few days ago, no reply.

Thanks, I have those colors but was thrown off by the instructions. Thanks, that makes it easy. Primed the hull last night, and drawing up plans where to keep it!! What a monster!

I also prefer to work with acrylics. faster drying, and easier to clean up as they are water based.

For my 1/350 Missouri I also did Ms 22 and was very happy with the Polly Scale paints. I was able to find bottles labeled with all three colors, 5H Haze grey, 5N Navy blue and 20B deck blue. I suspect that the 20B Deck Blue ought to be lightened a bit, as it seems much darker in comparison to the other colors, especially when you look at the black and white photos.

A couple of things I especially liked about these paints, was that not only did they cover very well when I was using a brush (as opposed to air brushing), but they also matched very well when I had to do some touchup by hand on spots that had previously been airbrushed.

Other than the obvious matter of how much harder the dazzle schemes are to paint, one reason I preferred the Ms 22, was that I'm not sure any of the Iowa class ever carried any of the dazzle schemes except while they were still in the Atlantic and never were painted that way in the Pacific.

G'day guys!

I just had a seroius accident. My Tamiya 1/700 Missouri took a 5ft dive off her shelf and suffered serious damage. Most of this I repaired, but whilst doing so I dug out my unbuilt Trumpeter Wissconsin, and decided to mount the lower hull to my Missouri!

Its taken a fair amount of sanding but they seem to meet perfectly (minor filling required of course!)

So far its not looking too bad, but I was wondering if anyone else has tryed this?

Greetings to all, I am new here and I confess I have not built a ship in quite a long time. I'd like to inquire of the combined experience and knowledge here about a 1/200th scale USS Iowa kit available from Scale Model Shipyard. It is indeed advertised as a kit for this ship and there is a 1/144th scale kit available too. I am not an inexperienced modeller, but my basis of experience and knowledge is model trains, I've built three home HO layouts and scratchbuilding, kitbashing, painting etc is within my abilities. We also use PE in MRRing. I've been asked to build the USS Missouri for an elderly lodge brother so any suggestions and assistance is very welcome. - Ike

:welcome: aboard! Heh, at first, I thought you were a new account created by another member, Jon Iverson. I'm not sure if anyone here has built the kit in question, but someone should be able to provide some information on it.
