Uh oh...that could be a problem...can't build her as she appears now then. Would you happen to have any pics of her with her non-skid pattern? I want to know how much of Trumpy's is correct.

The 1/700 Trumpeter...Pit-Road kit is closest to the New Jersey in accuracy.
If you want Mo, FILL IN all of the necessary recessed deck plank detail till you arrive at the Missouri's patern; that's what I did with the Tamiya New Jersey kit.
Remember too; the forwards fire control tower is different....
I'll say this only once........remember????????

Better off building the New Jersey.

Building NJ would mean making the ears, though =( I was hoping that Trumpy/PR would have made different deck patterns for the four ships. Did you just use putty to fill the gaps?

I'm not sure why there's that sphere in front of the tower...I'll be leaving it off, I guess. Do you think that the structure on the tower represents the Missouri structure enough?

Tony, Glad to see that your 1/350, real scale, model of the Mo is on your work bench again. Now are you going to finish her this time? Will it be ready for the Nats in 07?

Now I remember more correctly. Yes, the Trumpeter Missouri kit had somewhat of an accurate forward fire control tower. You could just enclose the roof of it and call it accurate. To do the New Jersey would be more work, no point in that; especially if you want to do the Missouri.
For the "spheres", they are the RPV drone antennae. The RPV drones were not in use the entire lifespan of the modernized Missouri. I have pics of Missouri with and without the RPV antennae and the related platforms.

The satellite antennae are also located in these same "high up" areas of the superstructure, (fwd fct and aft funnel), and they are round, recessed shaped.
Unlike with the RPV antennae, the satellite antennae do seem to be in all of the modern Mo pics I've seen.

Yes, BOTH of them.......


The RPV antennae sphere(s) were installed between May and December 1990.

Looks OUTSTANDING, Tony. One thing I found out when I did my Tamiya Missouri. The flag bag lockers that are molded into the deck are slightly too far forward from the actual position on the ship. You can tell when you look at the photos, that the deck opening aft of them in the model is quite a bit larger than it should be. I didn't notice until I'd gone way too far into the build to cut them off and re-locate them. It probably wouldn't matter too much, except when I installed the PE railing on the lockers and then ran the halyards up to the yard arm which is located up on the mast, the halyards wound up with a very pronounced diagonal run when in fact they should be a lot more close to vertical. Since I went to the trouble to scratch build the missing locker aft of the after stack, and modify the aft mast, I wish I'd noticed the problem on the forward ones before it was too late.

I have also scratched up the aft funnel flag bag; not attached yet.
Right now, I am focusing on the bow 20mm platform. I will now have to make a new one and find the exact shape to copy. I've been studying lots of bow-on shots. I still have to add on the anchor bolsters too. That will be easy when compared to the 20mm platform. Plus, I'll probably re-paint the metal deck area, as it has taken quite a bit of abuse lately.

Sorry to be dense, but the differences in the 4 Iowas were that the Iowa had an open bridge and different AA guns on the #2 turret. Were the other 3 the same?

How about the bow? Were they all the same shape? The Wisconsin, after having the bow replaced, was it different before & after?

Jeff: At WWII's end, all four Iowas had square bridges. So it really depends (as it always seems to be in ship modelling!) on the time period

Iowa and NJ were born with open bridges.
NJ then had rounded bridge before going to square. Not sure if the same is true for Iowa.

And Miss and Wis both had square bridge as built, I think.

Has anyone seen pictures, or have a review on the 1:350 Yankee Modelworks Iowa Class BB Replacement Turrets?

I went to the Yankee site, but it is under reconstruction.

The description of the product sounds quite interesting... turrets (both 16" and 5"), metal barrels, bloomer bags, etc.

I have the YM Iowa Class turrets; got them at the Nats for $25. I had to see them! I'm an Iowa fan!
Okay okay......I like L'Arsenal's 5" twin mounts better...with the L'Arsenal BRASS barrels. Kind of a pain to use the brass barrels, but probably the best set up.
The 16"50 Mk7 three gun turrets look pretty much the same as Tamiya's turrets...I have to tell you.
Of course, now I'll HAVE to post some pics...give me a minute...
Here are the 5" twin mounts for you to see...similar in most respects.

The CW barrels fall far short of the L'Arsenal offerings.

Please noone ask me to do a cost comparison here...okay?
Here are the main turrets...


The main battery turrets by CW look like resin cast already assembled Tamiya turrets...just no ladders in place. I can say this though.....I ruined one main battery kit turret trying to remove the molded in ladders on the turret face.
The CW turrets are ready for my Nuttal brass barrels....and the GMM vertical ladders for the turret faces. I'll not be using the CW cast barrels as they fall far short in quality.

Thanks for the prompt post. As usual, your insight is helpful and "to the point". I have a set of L'Arsenal 5" turrets and barrels, along with a set of Steve's 16" barrels (it still hurts to remember he is not with us physically). I will be thinking over the options.. it may be worth the price to get the 16" turrets without the ladders, along with the blast bags. Could save some precious time in trying to get the Missouri moving again!

G'day Guys!!

Its been a while since Ive posted here, but Ive finnaly got round to giving my Missouri her repair and refit after her (much) earlier fall. Ive rebuilt some of the structure and repaired the main guns. Theres still some parts that need replacing but I was quite happy with the lower hull fit, which I pinched from a Trumpeter Wissconsin.
