HI Steve,
This is interesting because replacing the deck is exactly what I planned to do for my build. I plan to do PoW around May 1941, so shortly after commissioning and before the Bismarck chase.

Did you say you had scribed the deck again, it's a bit difficult to see on the photos.

I plan to build mine waterline as well, so a recently purchased Dremel will perhaps persuade me to finally start it.

I did consider a wooden deck, then realised it would be painted in 1941 anyway so a lot of effort would be wasted.

Looking good so far!

Please post some pics of your PoW build as you make her.

To replicate the planked deck, I laid down Evergreen brand V-groove styrene sheet, very good to work with and extremely realistically replicates planked decks.

Hi Steve
I'll have a look out for the evergreen, does it come with different widths between the grooves and which did you use?

I will attempt to keep a log of the build but I expect it to be something of a long term committment. I hope to get a copy of the new Profile Morskie on the KGV class at Telford, or at least have a look to make sure it isn't the same old photos repackaged.

Hi Mike!

Oh yes the v-groove styrene sheet does come in various widths between grooves as well as different thickness of sheet. I used .025" (0.64mm) spacing x .020" (0.5mm) thick sheet.

I forgot to say and was only reminded earlier this evening when I was looking at it, but WEM are doing seconds on the KGV etched brass at a reduced price. I bought one and other than a couple of bent rails it was perfect. Not sure if you already have one but very much worth it even at full price!

I'm thinking of trying to finish my Airfix 1/600 KGV (below), which I'm building as of May 27, 1941. The construction of the Airfix parts is mostly done, "all" that is left is the WEM set specifically designed for the ship (it's a project unto itself).

Does anyone know if she carried her Walrus exposed on the catapult during the engagement with Bismark? I flipped through Tarrants book on the KGV -class last night, and the only picture of KGV during the battle I saw was very dark. I'd like to just leave the Walrus off if it was flown off or put in the hangar. I'd be surprised if it was still on board, due to the risk of fire, but I didn't see it mentioned in the book.

Hi Martin,
Given the foul weather at the time of the engagement I would have thought it would not be possible to launch the aircraft since safe recovery would have been almost impossible. Also given the heavy mist I doubt how much use a spotter aircraft would be. I have never heard any mention of use of any aircraft or any being considered. Obviously I stand to be corrected on this but I think you are safe to leave the aircraft safely tucked away in the hanger.

Hello, Sean!

The red hull is red automotive primer purchased from an auto parts store
sprayed from a can. I like the way automotive red primer replicates real
anti-fouling red. Boot stripe: black automotive primer sprayed from a
can. Gray hull: gray automotive primer sprayed from a can. I used
automotive primer on the hull because it looks great and gives the hull a
tough finish that handles well.

The hull was painted before the decks were installed. Red primer was
sprayed first. The boot stripe was painted rather unconventionally. I
think most modelers paint the red bottom and gray upper hull then finally
mask off and apply the boot stripe last. Rather than that method, I tried
painting in this order, red, black, then gray upper works last. I taped off
the red with Tamiya masking tape along the bottom of the boot stripe
then sprayed black primer all above. After the black hardened, I taped
off the boot stripe top and everything below and sprayed gray all above
that.

The decks and superstructure are all airbrushed with ModelMaster
Acryl using a Badger 200 I have had since I was 13 (that's 29 years
ago). Trusty old Badger!

I have four small, curious kids now and am temporarily living in a small
apartment while on temporary duty so I use non-toxic acrylic almost
exclusively now when indoors.

For Christmas, my wife Cathy bought me two PE sets including WEM's
Ultimate King George V set. What Loren Perry did for Tamiya's
Missouri, WEM did for all the ships of the KGV class.

There is a KGV class book in publication now, entitled "King George V Class Battleships" by Roger Chesneau (published by Chatham in 2004 - ISBN 1 86176 211 9). Although not as detailed or technical as the superb Raven & Roberts book, it is nevertheless a useful book for modelers and is rather inexpensive (about $18-20 US).

It contains detailed 1/700 scale plans of KGV in 1940 and 1945, excellent drawings of color schemes for KGV and PoW, terrific photographs of all ships of the class, and wonderful photographs of many superb KGV class models including two photographs of the official HMS King George V builders model residing in the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich.

The fellow you speak of Steve is also on my British Battleships reference list in the book section on this site with a photo.

I have a question regarding colors on the KGV. I want to depict it in the 'measure' scheme that had the blue/grey stripe down the side and the allover grey with wood decks. I believe it is on the side of the tamiya box as well in that scheme, allong with a gallery shot in Mike Ashey's book basics of ship modeling.

I am much more familliar with US ships. Does anyone know the colors used in that scheme and what time frame it was used? Also, is the anti fouling red the same as us ships or darker? Thanks! :wave_1:

And is there any Royal Navy website like navsource?
