thanks for answering, that sort of makes sense. If I understand correctly, the upper part of the structure is fixed in place on the top of the two columns, and the platform just below that travels up and down the outer column. Does that seem correct?

Yeah approximately, I think I posted a picture here somewhere of that same device in use on the Kirov class, where it is located forward on portside. It seems to be only used for transfer of dry cargo/ammo, the fuel transfer systems are located somewhere else.

Re the underway refuelling, I seem to recall reading somewhere that the Russians tended to practice "astern refueling" i.e. the tanker floats a bouy and line astern, and the refuelling ship picks up the line and hauls it in and basically fuels over the bow. Can't swear to this though. I have seen the large Brit RFA's "Oak class, I think" refuelling or "bunkering" the smaller, fleet supply ships such as the "Rovers" in this manner.

They do both, and occasionally they even do refueling over the stern at the same time as refueling over the side.
I have a picture of a Slava refueling over her bow from a Chilikin class if you want it.

Not sure, but it may be a directional esm antenna of some sort given the circular array of elements.

Which ship was this taken from? It looks like she is transiting Suez

Have a look at this photo of a much younger Slava. Just forward of bass tilt, on the centre line, you will see what is definately a cage type esm receiver antenna. What we see in the earlier photo is almost certainly a more modern replacement.

just for you, here's a close-up of that antenna.



I believe that the picture is of Moskva, in Suez as Tico says. Other pictures of Moskva show an identical antenna aft of the top dome. I can't see them on Varyag, but that may just be down to the pictures I can find.

Say I just ordered my Admiral Lazarev Kirov Battle cruiser and I was wondering if anyone has pictures of what a Kirov looks like at night because I was thinking of installing fiber optic lighting for my Kirov. If anyone has a picture that would be great.

Nakhimov was actually in upgrade for some years now, I suppose after the finishing of the Yaroslavl Mudry (second Neustrashimy) and the return of Kulakov (Udaloy class), they'll tackle her to get her finished first. (Unless there is something else in the works to have ugraded and returned to service too).
Anyhow I very much doubt Lazarev and "Ushakov" (which isn't Ushakov anymore since the name was transferred to a Sovremenny class destroyer) would return EVER to the fleet. Ushakov was or is in progress of being scrapped after all and taken out of service (hence her name removal), so was by far kept in mothballs!
So Nakhimov, I think she'll return, perhaps in a few years, but the other two, I sincerely doubt so.

I was browsing around in Google Earth the other day, and I actually looked over Severodvinsk, where the three inactive duty Kirovs were - latest shots, 2010 dating, show Kirov in dock on the north side of the harbour, in seemingly rather intact condition. Nakhimov/Kalinin is on the south side of the docking, and in earlier shots Lazarev/Frunze was moored to her outboard, but is now missing. I would surmise she's in for work, but I couldn't see her in a slip, so she might be under covers for more than normal work. They're all relatively close to the work site for Vikramaditya/Admiral Gorshkov/Baku, where you can see her under work and afloat.

Take from that what you will...

As far as I can see from the few dockyard pics that I have, the Slavas have a tunnel that runs between the props and ends on the transom just below the waterline. I am not sure how far this tunnel extends along the hull. Also, as far as I can tell, the Slavas' props exit the hull via skegs and are supported by a single A bracket.

Does anyone have any good pics, or better yet, sketches or drawings, that show these details and that they are happy to share?

Any help would be most appreciated.
