That would be a chaff blast I'm pretty sure, and that's off a Sovremenny

It is a Navalized "Flap Lid", the phased array component for the S-300 (SA-12) Gumble missile system. The Kirov Class and Slava class carries a navalized version of the S-300 referred to as the SA-N-6. As originally configured the system was integrated into the ship's air search radar with two Top Dome directors providing missile guidance/illumination. However the Piotr Veliky had the flap lid installed forward and retained a Top Dome Aft. Not sure why, but my guess is that Flap Lid provides better acquisition and guidance than the ships system. I don't know if it was a retrofit or installed from the outset. It is rather ungainly.

The radar in question is actually known as Tomb Stone on the Pyotr Velikiy, the only ship currently to deploy such a system in the Russian Fleet - Tomb Stone is also used on PLAN vessels that feature SA-N-6. Initial test deployment of SA-N-6 on Kara class Azov used Top Dome, and Pyotr Velikiy still retains one Top Dome, and it's used on both Kirov and Slava classes as the primary fire control radar for SA-N-6.

Tomb Stone, that's the one thanks. I would hazard a guess that it will engage more targets than Top Dome.

Just for interest, Tomb Stone is also used in the land based missile environment.

Thanks Bob. Tombstone seems to be widely used by the Chinese, e.g. on the Luzhou class destroyers.

The picture I posted earlier is a Chinese version as are these, and I wondered if there were many visible differences between it and the version on Pyotr Velikiy. They look identical, but any pictures would be useful. Anyone have a picture of the reverse side of the "flap"?

Say I just ordered my Admiral Lazarev Kirov Battle cruiser and I was wondering if anyone has pictures of what a Kirov looks like at night because I was thinking of installing fiber optic lighting for my Kirov. If anyone has a picture that would be great.

Not Kirov, but a nice shot of some Russian ships at night that might give you a few ideas. I'll leave it to someone else to identify them.

Thanks for the info and pictures of the Tombstone radar system. Now, does anyone have any decent pictures of the Cross Sword system?

What and where is the Cross Sword system located?

Andrew

in regards to this class, the only example with Cross Swords is Pyotr Velikiy - you can find this on the aft superstructure, just above the flight control area, aft of her Kite Screech and Top Dome. Cross Sword being associated with the SA-N-9, which are only fitted Aft on the Velikiy (there should be eight more launchers forward, with one on that nice big flat platform above the Mineral-E Search Radar domes).

Page 16, halfway down, Carr put up a drawing of a Kalinin/Velikiy level Kirov, with both Cross Swords shown - look at the forward radar farm on the top, and aft from Top Dome and Kite Screech in that order, it goes Top Dome, Kite Screech, Cross Swords. Two dishes above the larger unit which has a mostly/flat array with a few legs standing from it.

Page 13, Neptune posted a shot of the aft structure of Kalinin - the difference between Kalinin and Velikiy being the presence of Cross Swords. Picture Kirovbw90002 of the aft structure is almost literally looking right at the (nonexistant) Cross Swords - it's in the second set he posted.

Carr also posted one on page 12, from Velikiy's hangar looking up at the turret - you can just see the Cross Swords above the perspective if you pay attention.

I'll be honest - all the pics I've seen, there's never a good shot of Velikiy's actual Cross Swords set - but it's also used on the Udaloy class, of which there are better pictures.

Hi Bob and North Sea

A new search found the following, not all of the radar but a good close up:

Image

Bob I have a series of the photo you shared, but only in a small format. Could you do me a big favour and point me at the link you used?

Thanks,

Andrew

Thanks Guys. I think I have all the pictures from Pyotr Velikiy, but I didn't realise Cross Swords was on Udaloy as well, so that gives me something to watch out for.
