Hello, to all pre WW1 IJN fans :thumbs_up_1:

I will be working on Akitsushim 1894 from Modelkrak. so far I only have two photos of this cruiser from google . and immediately I found the mast height it's different from instruction sheet. Upon examining this kit, i notice that the pilot housing it's a big and no armor housing (command post) presented.

However, I can't confirm it, since the photos i have it's not clear. perhaps just like Modelkrak Naniwa kit, the pilot housing(square) it's armor housing? also on the kit there it's little cabin molded at the stern of ship next to QF gun on top of pooh deck. which it's not in the photo.

any idea?? inputs??

thanks...

I can't comment on Akitsushima since I have never seen this particular model but I would like to warn you on Modelkrak kits in general. Accuracy of their products vary widely and I do know that some of their early Russian and Japanese ships were based purely on inaccurate sketches (not even drawings) from Suliga's "Ships of Russo-Japanese War" volumes 1 and 2. Those publications were supposed to give people very general ideas on how Russian and Japanese ships looked like and were not meant as an aid to ship modelers.

Just a quick note: Russian drawing labelled "Акицусима" is from Suliga's publication I have mentioned earlier and has to be treated with great caution.

The masts were likely modified, because Akitsushima was active between 1894-1927, e.g. by adding wireless equipment.

For the Chinese-Japanese war, this photo should be useful:

LOL mrwawa that's the problem with Modelkrak: the closer you look the less you like it. Your scratchbuild looks better than their attempt already. And I really like the gunboat. Looks like you started with a dud and will end up with a diorama! :thumbs_up_1:

Thanks DariusP and moomoon.. :wave_1:

here are the new update... ( i have feeling, i am posting on the wrong thread.... should i move it to online build project?)

Any I am running into new problem! the gun shield on british Elswick design... Any idea what shape is it??

Currently i am using gun shield from Modelkrak, and it's a little bit too thick. so I am thinking to build it from plastic stock. and how should I tackle this gun shield if I build it from scratch?

Thanks.. :woo_hoo:

I agree that this thread might be more at home in online build projects forum. Now, I am not sure that I understand what you mean by "the gun shield on british Elswick design"... I am assuming 6" guns but, since Akitsushima wasn't Elswick build, do you have any info that she was armed with Elswick QFs and not Armstrongs? I did some checking online and in Jentschura's book but couldn't find any answers.
Anyway, here is 6inch QF Elswick:

And here is Armstrong:

I'm still not sure what caliber guns you have in mind but I have never seen type of shield from first two photos used oh Japanese ship of the period.
Here are shields for 6inch and 3 pounder guns from Fuji's builders model:

Thank DariusP

I am researching two different gun, first it's 6" /40 QF and second it's 12 pounder QF, both i have no data of whom built it for my particular ship.

the gun shield I posted above, i have seen in on the new japanese TV show. "SakanouenoKumo" and Naniwa's model in New Castle Museum. on the japanese ship Naniwa it has this shape of gun shield. however Naniwa was installed with Krupp Gun "2 × 260 mm (10 in) L/35 Krupp guns 6 x 152 mm (6.0 in) L/35 Krupp guns"

Anyhow your picture of IJN Fuji, has confirm the gun shield shape.

thanks...

Btw do you have anymore of IJN fuji model pictures? or link?
