Thanks very much for the help Dan

Just a follow up question:

I experimented the modification using my Hasegawa kit, and with my clumsy hands, damaged the ammo boxes:

Should this untoward event also happen to my Tamiya kit, which of the aftermarket parts below would you recommend as accurate replacement ammo boxes?

Thanks again

Damaged your boxes? Heavens to Murgatroyd! What will you do???????

As far as those choices go, it's pick your poison. As the Alliance pick shows, there
were two kinds of 25mm ammo boxes: a vertical and a horizontal type. The Alliance ones
look pretty good; the PE versions are probably beautiful but require the extra
effort to fold them correctly.

IIRC, the FineMolds new 1/350 25mm weapons come with some of the ammo boxes: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/image/10138391a/20/1

Thanks again Dan, yeah, I think I'm being too fuzzy, and to think the "damage" was only a minute scratch
Those Finemolds offerings look really nice, I think they'll make perfect replacements

Ok, hope you won't mind but I have one last question (for today  ) I came by the hobby shop
and couldn't help getting the Hasegawa 1/350 offering of the 1940 fit of Yukikaze,
any heads up on the possible issues for this particular kit and as well as on Hasegawa's late war fit version?

So far, I can see the same errors as those on my Tamiya version.

Thanks again

Well, the Hasegawa kit seems comparable in quality to the Tamiya kit. It is full hull only. The big issue is one of scale; it's slightly overscale, though I can't remember by how much. The overscale extends proportionally in all dimensions.

Pardon me for yet another set of questions for our IJN experts:

First question: on the Tamiya kit, there appears to be a solid railing (splinter shields?) on the search light platform aft of funnel number 2, and on the gun director platform forward of the aft torpedo storage (see below):

AA director.jpg

Are these correct or should they only have 2-bar railings similar to the AA gun platforms?

Second question: the kit has what appears to be a davit (torpedo handling davit?) located on the starboard side of the aft torpedo launcher (see below):

The WEM set on the other hand, suggests that another torpedo handling davit should be placed on the port-side of the forward torpedo launcher, is this suggestion correct?

Thanks very much guys :thumbs_up_1:

As you have surmised, both platforms are surrounded by railings that are sometimes covered by canvas (hence, the solid representation). The torpedo davit is as you have circled it, aft the starboard 7.5m launch, next to the tip of the #2 TT mount.

You can just make it out below.

Thank you so much for sharing that picture Dan, this confirms the 2-bar railings on the platforms I mentioned, as well as the davit on the starboard side of #2 TT mount, as depicted in the Tamiya kit

OTOH, it seems that it would be safer not to follow WEM's suggestion to add another davit at the portside of the #1 TT mount, since the following pictures do not support their claim:

Correct. IIRC, only the earlier Fubuki type had two torpedo davits, one to each side. Thereafter, with the change in the type of reload gantries and layout, all subsequent classes just had the one starboard davit. Except the Akizukis, which had theirs further aft to port. Can't recall about the Matsu/Tachibanas.

Thanks again for the detailed confirmation, Dan :thumbs_up_1:

Well, I confess, I was planning to finish my Tamiya Yukikaze prior to moving on to the Hasegawa completion 1940 version, but I couldn't resist opening the box, and next thing I knew, I've completed the hull

One curious finding with the Hasegawa kit is that the box top says "completion 1940", which I took to mean "1940-fit". However, the hull has degaussing cables, which, based on an earlier discussion, was only added in late 1941 in addition to painting out the hiragana writing on the hull sides.

To avoid the difficult work of shaving off all those cables, I'm contemplating on just modelling my Hasegawa Yukikaze in her late 1941 fit by leaving off the hiragana decals.
Are there any other significant differences between the 1940 and late 1941 fit of Yukikaze?

Well, there was a brief period, say the last few months of 1941, where the fleet was transitioning to a war footing, which included the addition of a degaussing cable. The DDs still carried their hiragana & hull #s.

Thanks for those late 1941 pics Dan, it seems the Hasegawa kit more closely represents this period rather than the 1940-fit as mentioned in the box.

By any chance, was there a particular period wherein Yukikaze had no more hiragana/hull numbers, yet at the same time, carried the same fittings/armament as her late 1941 fit?

I'd like to model her without hiragana, but not go to the extent of bashing the kit.

Hey guys! So finally im getting to my Destroyer build and for the first set will be , Yukikaze, Isokaze and Hamakaze, ( ill post a build progress page late this week) My qustion is the funnel decals, i know it is theorized that Yamato had a rising sun with waves decal on the funnel on the Ten-go mission, and that the two Moon destroyers had white circles on the funnel. What about the 3 kazes? I have seen pictures of model builds with yukikaze with the rising sun decal on the first funnel and no white bands on the second funnel, but no real photo evidence. As for the two other kazes, ive seen white stripes on the second funnel but nothing on the first funnel. I have seen ideas for the first funnel decals range from more rising suns with waves to , tringels, circles, to squares . Does anyone have any knowlege one this!
Thank you

All three sisters were designated DesDiv 17 with two funnel bands on #2 funnel. There is one photo of Isokaze with some sort of symbol on #1 funnel, but whether it's a circle, half circle, chrysanthenum, triangle, or something else is anyone's guess.

Hmm ok i didnt know about all three sisters having the two funnel bands on the number 2 stack. Sadly there aren't any clear tengo destroyer pics other than the ones on Blackfootal's yamato page. I was looking at a pic of hamakaze being straffed and couldnt make anything out nor what ever that white bloch on Isokaze :(. I kinda wonder if isokaze still had her rope and rolled Matt anti-splinter protection still on her .. Assuming that she left everything on from the pictures you provided of her during leyte .. But that is purely guess work on my part.. And after reading A requiem of the battleship Yamato, in the beginning there is a part where they stripped the ships of anything that is flammable including lifeboats.. That said there are definitely pictures of lifeboats still on the destroyers. If only there were more primary sources other than the book I mentioned above and captain Hara's book being on Yahagi :(

I believe the forward lifeboats were removed after Leyte Gulf in order to mount the single 25mms with splinter shielding along the sides. They all probably retained the rope splinter shielding as well, IMHO.

Right i knew about the forward davits being removed for the additional single mounts. And if you think they had there rope splinter protection then i might add them to mine as well. Do you know where i could find the leyte photos album from Isokaze before leyte in 44 ? I know you posted a few before and i have those pics saved. Im hoping that maybe there are a few that would give more light on how the destroyer crews of the kazes would have placed protection among the ship. And give me an idea how it might've looked in 1945 during ten-go . Thanks

The best source I have is Maru Special #105. I can ID 12, possibly 14 photos taken from Isokaze. Mind you, there are better versions of some of these photos elsewhere. And, there may be more in the collection; I just don't know if that's true or not.

Hi Guys!! Question.. while looking at the Fujimi kit, prepping it to be worked on. I noticed that the bottom of the back side of the kogero's bridge were slightly different in that the kit bows downward and in the Gakken books its strait.. which is right?
