I know this can't be answered, but could the photos of Radford and Nicholas dated August 24, 1943 be misdated? Could they be from July 6 or 7, 1943 right after the battle of Kula Gulf? There seems to be a lot of crew on deck in the Radford photo and while not as many, still several on the deck of Nicholas. Both of these ships stayed behind at Kula Gulf to rescue survivors from the Helena and brought them back to Tulugi. The Radford photo reminds me of the photos of Laffey loaded with Wasp survivors.

As a side note I met a former crew member of Radford a few years ago. He was already 90 or so. He had vivid memories of pulling Helena survivors out of the water on board Radford. His name was/is Jim Ramsey. He also told me that he had attended a couple of Helena reunions and that former Helena crew members still remembered him. He was born in Arkansas and was friends with my father's family. Jim came to LA in the 1930s looking for work and when war came he was working in an exempt industry. He joined the Navy anyway and was assigned to the Radford. In 2003 or 2004 my father and mother were out here in Central California visiting me from Arkansas and my father wanted to go see Mr. Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey and his wife had retired from the refrigeration and real estate businesses in the LA area and had moved to their horse ranch in Santa Ynez, California. His wife was ill at the time of our visit and she soon passed away. Mr. Ramsey was still a tall cowboy at 90. Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey had two sons, one played quarterback for UCLA and won a Rose Bowl in the 1980s. He also played a few years in the NFL. The other son was a LA fireman and at one time was a fire boat captain. Since my father passed away in July of 2005 I have lost contact with Mr. Ramsey and don't know if he is still alive. His life story was very interesting.

It might have been Tom Ramsey who played at UCLA.

Another thing supporting Frank's premise that the date is wrong is the fact that after July 13, '43, Honolulu's bow looked like this: http://www.navsource.org/archives/04/048/0404812.jpg This photo was taken a week later on July 20, '43. Obviously, the August date for the 20MM on the bow is not really possible. (By 16 Aug, she was already at Pearl.)

The date can and is wrong in this case. Many of the dates provide in the captions provided on the mounting cards for 80-G photos at NARA are wrong. I find it interesting that past researchers have penciled in "corrected" info on the card in many cases. These photos came from a series of shots I think were taken by the same photographer and some photos in the series were dated in July 1943. When I scan photos at NARA, I don't spend much time sorting the "real" dates and just put what is on the card ... sometimes even the miss spelled name of the ship. I try to correct dates, but most times never get arround to it. I should also note that the date shown can actually be the date the Photo was received and/or processed.

I sometimes come across the same photo/photos in different boxes and they have different dates. I consider myself lucky if I get the right month.

These photos do show RADFORD and NICHOLAS with the survivors from HELENA because I have seen the same photos with that information correctly noted in books published years ago.

Rick, that fits as well. Honolulu returned to Pearl by the 16th and would have had the time to get the film processed there by the following week.

The DVD drawings that Dave McComb has for sale are the "Bath Iron Works FLETCHER class Engineering Drawings" and I think are well worth the cost. It takes awhile to navigate all the drawings, no real "searchable" index other that the list on-line. BIW built the single quad 1.1-in, two twin 40-mm, three twin 40-mm, and five twin 40-mm mounts configured ships ... hence they cover just about all of the major configurations seen during WWII. You can expand the drawings to most any size you need and print them out. I have enlarged and taken screen shots of areas I'm interested in and saved them/printed them for use. There is enough information here to build your own 1:1 scale FLETCHER, plus the purchased/government furnished item.

Dave is reworking the website and it is a little hard to find the index, so here is the link.

You know ... I don't know if the table of offsets are there. The contour lines are there. THE SULLIVANS was one of the five twin 40-mm mounts configured FLETCHERS built by Bethlehem-SF, to the same basic plans as the BIW drawings. Building-yards varied in "styles" of bulwarks and such.

I just tried my first loft attempt using the anatomy of the ship sullivans drawings.I was surprised it lofted without any errors the first time. now is there problems lol obviously I have to adjust a few stations but im happy I got it through the first time so easily. I am drawing it in full scale.

Found this shot of the USS Kimberly (DD-521) over on Nav source kind of interesting.

Undated, location unknown. Probably taken from the deck of LST 647 somewhere around Okinawa.

The after twin Bofors tower is completely gone; was she damaged or was it removed from some odd reason? Could make for a neat model. Just wondering, I found it neat.

Found this in DANFS for DD-521:
"During February the destroyer prepared for the Okinawa campaign which would advance American forces next door to the Japanese homeland. Departing San Pedro Bay 21 March for radar picket duty, the destroyer off the Ryukyus, was attacked 26 March by two "Vals." Despite accurate antiaircraft fire and numerous hits, one enemy plane, trailing fire and smoke, crashed into the aft gun mounts killing 4 men and wounding 57. Kimberly cleared the area 1 April for repairs at Mare Island arriving 25 April."

I'm studying the Fletcher-class and this forum has been a fantastic help.

I plan to visit the USS Kidd (Baton Rogue, LA) in late April. I know there are several pictures of her already available, but if you have a specific detail in mind I would consider trying to photograph it for you. I'll be checking back here from time to time so just let me know.

Hi Don, thanks for your invitation.
I am trying to super detail a 144th scale USS Kidd (Revell kit ) from photographs. There are quite a lot of pics of the Kidd on the web but a lot of the finer detail is missing, specifically such as:

The area on the outer walls of the pilot house structure,

The insides of the bulwarks surrounding the walkways around the pilot house,

The instruments on the inner part of the fwd railings (on either side of the ladder) on the upper deck of the deckhouse mounting the 2x Mk 51 directors (just fwd of the Quad Bofors).

Also, in general, the outer walls of all the superstructure around the ship.

I Guess these are photos only a modeler would take.Whatever you can post would help massively!
Many thanks and best regards,
Peter Bouwer

I've got a complete walk around on the on the Kidd (top and bottom). If you want them, pm at this site. I've been down there for the field days for the last two years. If you love Fletchers, you should sign up for one. Details are on their web site.

Les,

I'm interested in hearing more about your complete walk around of the Kidd. What kind of (and how many) pictures have you taken?

Also, I have seen the field days information on the Kidd website. It does interest me as they seem to welcome workers who are non-military, such as myself.
