So im sitting here looking at the Mirage 1/350 Type IXc hull and the Mirage 1/400 Type IXD hull, and they are nearly identical in size lol. Was the Type IXD huss really that much deeper than a Type IXC?

Yes, the various IXD variants were much larger then the IXC and previous variants, both in length, beam and hull shape. I haven't done the math, but I believe a 1:400 IXD must be very similar to a 1:350 IXC. (Like a 1:400 Type IX is very similar to a 1:350 Type VII boat...)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Type_IX_submarine

For cross sections of the Type IXD you need 'The U-boat' from Eberhard Roessler, arguably the most comprehensive 'bible' on the technical layout of German submarines, with good drawings.

Of all the WWII era subs, possibly the most attractive, balanced appearance. Lots of possible schemes in finish and fit,the aftermarket will certainly have a field day with etch, decking, armament, etc. Publishers as well,my favorite sub has had nowhere near the coverage of the Type VII or the US fleet boats.Heck, just wonderful news for all except my card balances!!

With some time to wait on the Fall release of the big Type IX re. Revell, could some folks share a list of their favorite references for the big girl?
Thanks!
Mike

Hi Mike,

In my view two references are very useful:

- Vom Original zum Modell - Typ IX. Some very good reproductions of original drawings, plus very useful data on the arrangement of flooding holes and railing stachions of individual ships. Recommended, only second hand available.

- The U-Boat (or the original version in German) by Eberhard Rössler - considered the bible on all German U-boats. However less detailed on the Typ IX.

Thank you,Maarten!
I found the "Original zum Modelle" via Amazon, new, for 10.00 US,and I agree,Roessler's work is a bit sketchy on the Type IX. Another useful book is "U 505,the last voyage",also Amazon available, plus here is a good walk-around link:http://www.cybermodeler.com/naval/uboot/u-505_walk.shtml
That is all I know of,most history and memoirs I found are pretty thin on the boats themselves.

Hello all,

My first post on the forum of this excellent site.
Not really a fulltime ship modeler but I have just completed the AFV Club 1/350th scale Type VIIB with Voyager's detail set and it was such fun that I want more! :)

Looking to build a Type IX in the same scale and I see Hobby Boss, Bronco and a few more offer kits of this subject.
So, which kit is considered to make the best representation of the Type IX?
I am not limited to a specific version.

I don't build 'em, but the Type IXs have always been my favorite type of U-boat. Must have built the Aurora U-505 a half dozen times as a kid. To see the real one in Chicago was fantastic.

The Hobby Boss and the Bronco versions are essentially the same kits, although with different decals, stand, PE fret and so on. But they share the same plastic parts. They also share the same (slight) errors, in particular the stem is too much slanted backwards in both kits, making the bow look more like a Type VII, while the Type IX really had a more blunt bow. This is very easy to correct.

The difference between the kits further lies in the choice of the deck, the Type IXB kits showing the earlier steel decks, while the Type IXC having the later wooden planked decks. Finally the choice of the conning tower (Turm in German) determines which kit you should choose. On the later wooden decks the forward deck gun was rarely carried anymore.

So here's your choice: type of conning tower and type of deck, further the ships where very similar. If you really for a radical change (Type IXD1/2 to name one) you are in for a lot of scratch building.

Further we have the Mirage Hobby Type IXA kit, I haven't got it myself, but the pictures of the sprues are not very encouraging to me.

Cheers!

Excellent info! :)
Thanks for taking the to write all this down, very much appreciated.
Thinking about all this, it sounds like I want a Type IXC.
So, considering HB and Bronco are nearly the same plastic, is the PE any better in one of the two kits?

I do like Bronco's AFV kits so I may go with their kit.
I suppose there is some aftermarket available tol, will have to look around a bit.

(BTW, that was me above posting as 'guest'. Not sure why my name was not shown.)

Greetings gentleman!!!

This is a type of U-boats I've been eager to know more but I have failed to find any particular book on them exclusively. There are books solely dedicated to the hundreds of Type VII, some books to the Type XXI and XXIII and even to the Type II's!!!! Nothing I can find technical about the Type IX's other then usual historical books about a particular submarine, Paukenschlag or their other operations during the war!
Any advices??
Best regards,

Filipe

I agree with Peppe, 'Vom Original zum Modell - Typ IX' is the best single technical source on this type, not very expensive either, only some 10 Euros. You will have to work your way through the German captions, and the section on model building of the Typ IX is rubbish, you can simply tear it out. :heh:
But the drawings are worth every penny you spend on the book, and you have the option to order them separately on large scale if you need. The drawings in the book are of good quality though, and allow for being enlarged to the desired scale.

Maarten

So have there been any rumors of revell making a 144 version yet? I will be pre-ordering the 1/72 on free time hobbies next week...
