Progress continues on my PT-495. I've used Model Master Enamel "Field Green" and Model Master Acrylic "Aircraft Carrier Type 2".

I've bashed some guns together from JAG PT-200 40mm, 20mm and 37mm and L'Arsenal 20mm's. The pedestals are just styrene rod and can be removed from the holes for safety, as wells adjusted up or down. I got lucky with the stars and bars decals. They are from GMM's 1/350 WW2 USN Aircraft Markings set.

The camo pattern isn't just like Ed's. I tried. And the decals are not set permanently, yet.

I wonder if these boats of RON 33 are nestled next to the Oyster Bay. This photo will be most valuable in the details for my diorama.

How am I doin'? Let me know. Yea, yea! The torpedos are coming!

You can't quite tell, but I've toned down the green and the blue decals with a dark pastel chalk weathering and applied a dull coat over all. I found some numerals small enough for the hull numbers.

As promised............TORPEDOES!

And a black wash and another dull coat.

And since this is a "Calling All.........Ship Fans" thread, I will continue my "Work In Progress" elsewhere. Possibly "Calling All Barnegat Class Seaplane Tenders" or "1/350 PT Boat Tender".

Thank you, Ed, for the beautiful model of the PT-495. It will be my reference for this boat and the next 6 or so that I have yet to go.

This is Revell's old kit, started maybe 20+ years ago and pretty much left in this state albeit unpainted since then. I decided to use WEM's USN WWII Tropical Green paint for something a little different; it was started into MTB Green when I started it back up a year ago. I just painted the Norfolk Anti-fouling today and thought I'd post the pics for those who've never seen the tropical green before.

This was the first stepped hull I'd ever had to mask before, which lent itself to some experimentation. If you look at photo two, I basically ran a long line of tape up to the break and when it wrapped over the edge it curved "out of the way." I then ran a second one at a harder angle in and immediately started curving it out so that when looked at from the front and side it appears straight and level. It's not perfect, as you can see in the second pic the two sides aren't even, but it's hard to tell when looking from the bow on, so I'll just make sure no one picks it up to look at the bottom ;)

Tape used was Tamiya 10mm wide cut into thinner strips; roughly 2-3 mm wide.

You pulled it off, Tracy! :thumbs_up_1: It isn't easy for anybody, I wouldn't think. Especially me, The Newbie. :newbie:

The seaplane tenders that I am making full hull have a curve at the stern and it curves down, as well as inboard. It can trick the eye while trying to tape a straight and level boot topping in that area. That's why I like the waterline models!

I usually go from keel up.. I just find it easier to curve the tape in that direction than to do the red, then gray, then boot topping. This one I did the green first and then the anti-fouling... I don't think it would have made much of a difference either way with the chines and hard corners!

Looking at the original scans, I can see no evidence of a hard line that indicates a boot stripe.
I.E. it looks like accumulated grime.

Are you speaking of "my" 1/350 PT Boat? The bow 37mm is from the JAG PT-200 kit. All of the forward gun pedestals are scratch built with styrene rod. I plan to cover these guns with canvas covers for my diorama.

Does anyone here have any experience with (or even seen) the Gulfstream models 1:96-scale 77' Elco PT boat? I've been asked to build one, and would like to know what I'd be getting into.

Thanks.

Hi Sean,

I was given that kit by a gentleman who no longer wanted it. I'm going to have Alex Johnson build it for me since I can't build myself ...

I'm no builder, but it doesn't look like a bad kit. Someone once told me that it appeared to him that they made the hull by taking the Airfix RAF ASRL and cutting it down. I can't confirm that, but that's what I was told. The upperworks is of the first series of the 77 footers, obviously after they removed the domes from the turrets, so it'd be a breeze to depict one of the 'Expendables' of Bulkeley's Squadron 3.

But, Alex is going to do alot of plastic [resin] surgery to make it into a second series 77 footer, possibly the 66 boat with that crazy scheme she wore in New Guinea.

The one thing which is BAD about the kit are the twin 50s in the turrets, which have NO detail to them at all. Alex says that he'll substitute 1:72 .30 caliber guns and that they'll be an excellent stand-in for the 50s.

Hey, Ed?

Yeah, ... Hi. I clicked on the link you supplied in your posting and I clicked on a few photos, and each time I did, my Norton told me that the photos contained a Trojan embedded in them. I just thought you and others should know that.

By the way, I've always loved your 495 model. It shows true craftmanship Ed.

All,

I just wanted to keep you in the loop about this. My revised PT book is completed and was just burned to a CD/DVD and will be mailed out to Nimble Books, LLC first thing tomorrow.

As I have information on its release and availability, I will post it.

Garth

Garth,

Does your new book have any info, history, or photos of PT Boat Tenders like Oyster Bay, Mobjack, Willoughby, or Watchapregue?

My Oyster Bay work-in-progress: Leyte Gulf, Oct 1944 with MTB Ron 33.

Does anyone know if Pt boats used to carry Marines on board in small teams?

I have an idea for my 1/35 PT boat for a diorama....
