Hey PetrolGator. Sorry to hear that you are/were not happy with your dazzle scheme. I think it look good. Have you thought about using a tape and liquid combination mask. It works really well around details and where pieces of tape overlap. It takes a little practice because you need to position the tape pretty spot on. If the tape grabs the dried liquid mask it might pull it up. If you want to try it, just apply some liquid mask where you want the tape to be with some into the paint area. Place tape in desired locations after liquid mask is dry. Use a sharp hobby knife to cut along the edge of the tape with just enough pressure to cut the liquid mask only(take extra care around details). Remove the dried liquid mask from the to be painted area. I made an example from a extra deckhouse piece from my DD.

The technique is in this thread, I think. It works well for me!

Small update:

I used a brown wash to add some additional dirt to the ship. I also "chipped" the hull with some Tamiya Sky Grey and hit it with some Future. I'm going to use some oils tomorrow for rust, then continue adding PE and the smaller bits.

....been trying to blend some of the weathering and dirtied up hull. I had a major screw up on the starboard side and have eliminated a LOT of the smudging. There's still a lot to do.

Image

I've lightened the weathering under the aft most gun and empty 1.1 in gun tub.... looks a TON better. I still need to do a little bit of work to do 5-O underneath the funnel and along the hull. BTW, the contrast between the thin band of 5-L and thicker paint forward is due primarily to my iPhone camera and the gloss from the Future... isn't nearly that apparent in person. I'm still going to lighten it a bit with some VERY careful dry brushing. Also, fitted some guns... just because I wanted to see how they looked.

Image

Port view shows how my weathering will look once blended. This side is done and ready for some oil paint-based rusting.

Image

Torpedo tubes are done. That "wavy" transition between the 20-B and 5-L was an affect I've seen on a few DE and DDs in WWII. I just thought it looked cool and wanted to reproduce it. You may note the white line along the base of the superstructure. That's... more Trumpeter fit shenanigans currently being fixed with Elmer's.

Image

Amidships. I still need to bend some of her ladder into shape, but those look OK. Note that I'm using the kit supports for the forward AA gun tubs. The PE from Tom's just pissed me off and... ended up being scrapped. If I did this over, I'd use thin brass tubing, honestly.

The base has been sanded and puttied. I'm going to paint it in this awesome smoky black from Alcad to add some shine.

All for now.

I like it. Makes me want to break mine out and get back to it.

I'm playing with oils and just having fun with this build. The "glossiness" is a result of a Future layer. I'll dullcoat once she's done:

Opinions? I'm thinking about laying it on a little heavier on the stern of the ship. I concentrated on the bow, considering that it'll see a LOT more water on deck with her flush design.

More guns added and some of the wear toned down... I'm 50/50 on the WEM 1.1 in, but that's about the best on the market unless I got white metal.

Pictures show that I have some filling to do with white glue (see forward gun tub) but overall, it's turning out good, just slowly.

Moderate progress. I've started adding railing to the upper deck.... unsure if I'll leave it 5-L or not. I kind of like the contrast. Cable reels have been added (not painted) and all her 20mm guns are attached. I have some work to do on getting the railing where I'm happy along the superstructure, then I'll work on the depth charge racks. Finish line ahead!!

Small update... been a busy day.

I've installed her port and starboard depth charge racks and painted the railings to match the dazzle. I've started clean up on the paint, but still have a lot to do.

Tomorrow: Aft racks, remaining deck fittings, and detail painting. Ideally, she'll be ready for rigging Thursday. Ideally.

It's nice to see a Buckley being built.

I'm currently working on mine, which I'll keep as the England. I don't think she ever wore anything other than Ms. 21. Giving 22 a try might have been interesting.

Great work.

Thanks. I'm hoping to have most of it done today.

I just got in some figures I ordered from L'Arsenal. Wow. These things are so fragile/detailed I'm kind of scared.

Great work PG.

Have only the primer on mine so far.
I have snapped the mast as its very easy to do so, am thinking of a brass one to be able to continue.
Yes the L-arsnal figures are very fragile, suggest you paint them on the spru and then gently remove from the rear.
You will find that they break a leg very quickly and glued back with s/glue.
They are very nice figures once painted and onboard, good luck. :wave_1:

Watching this build with great Interest. :thumbs_up_1:

I thought they were depth charge reloads for the side launchers? LOL

So, here's "progress." This is my first kit in 1/350 and for some reason, the railing is giving me fits. I use the glue/mask/bend/proceed method, which works GREAT in 1/700, but damn man... I'm hoping (read: going to HAVE TO) finish this up today, or it's not going to Pensacola with me.

Anyway. I have some small detail work to do, painting wise, plus need to weather added parts to match the overall look of the boat. I'll do a bit more "rusting" along the rails and aft depth charges as well. The bridge is pretty much complete. I even managed to add a small scratch built "windscreen" like I've seen in pictures of many Buckleys.

IF I have time, I'm adding some L'Arsenal figures to the ship. Honestly, I still can't believe how nice they are.

That's all from last night. Hopefully, I'll have a great update tonight. :please:

Image

Note issues with railing and hull mating. Thankfully, this ship is NOT pristine and I can work a lot of the flaws into the overall weathering. Thank God I used to actually paint.

Image

Fully armed and operational!

Image

Note bridge windscreen. I think it adds a LOT to the look of the ship. Again, you can see where I spectacularly failed with the superglue and railing. I've sanded a LOT of the excess off, but still need to do some blending to make it work.

Happens to the best of us PG.
What I do in 1/350 on the railings is to bend to shape first where ness and dry fit, then put with a cocktail stick a small amount of CA at start and in spots along the railing and let dry, then run with the cocktail stick along the inside of the ship and again let dry.

This by the way having sprayed the fret and sealed with varnish or some such before hand, then you can after cutting off spru fret and fixing, just finish the rail later with paint and the finish matt varnish to complete.
Sounds long winded but it works for me. :cool_2:

Thanks. I usually fit the railings but ships with that bow flair still make it REAL hard to get it right. I usually just work my way up the bow.

Honestly, part of my problem last night is that I got in a hurry. I won't do that again.

Yep, the hammers are attempts at replicating depthcharge arbors, the plates and plugs to which the charges are strapped before placing in the k guns for launch. GMM's set includes replacements for the plate section.

I bought this England with a Tom's set included... was still tempted to get the GMM setup for the more detailed parts (and pre cut rails....)

Maybe I'll build one in 20-B/5-N and do just that. I love tin cans.
