Hello,

I present to you my new project.

Initially I wanted to do the Fuso in drydock at KURE in the 1930s with in the background a crane of 20T. After multiple search, I found only two engravings representative said crane and Kure arsenal.

I therefore resumed searches with different search engines (the one who returned me the most results and Yander. An engine of Russian research that presents many photos in HD).

I therefore oriented towards the arsenal of NAGASAKI with its giant 200T crane. Below the photos that I use to make my drawings.

The following photo is my main source. It is in HD and allows me to zoom for details of the buildings.

Image

Always on Yandex, I found a 3D modeling of the crane that was made during a renovation of the latter project. Of this study there were online a video and photos to have all of the details of the crane.

Once all that studied and digested, I threw myself into the phase drawing crane, buildings, railway items (loco and wagons) and some details for the battleship (mainly of the doors and hatches of bridge)

For the latter, I left the dimensional drawings that are in the book (Anatomy of the Ship - The Battleship 'Fuso').

After two months of work, I've drawn 5 A4 of PE boards for buildings, 3 boards for the crane, 1 plank for trains; 2 boards for the FUSO.

And here are the first pictures of 2 buildings and mounting of the crane tests.

Image

The large building is 175mm by 70 and 75 height. Personally, I find it super. However he'll dress up and fill the Interior as on the picture you can see especially vacuum.

Image

As for the crane, for example at the level of the dimension I was inspired crane 1/700 at AMW. But there are such differences in terms of details between the two scales (1/700 and 1/350) that I have completely redesigned and detailed the crane.

This part drawing took me a month and I still have to make a lot of changes. The arrow arms are super and mainly the mesh internal of the latter (on the photo it y arm but in reality there will be two). On the other hand I have to redo the vertical component of the crane. Too broad 03 tenths and too thin.

Image

So much for the moment. I returned to Assembly of the 4 other buildings and alterations for the crane drawings.

Good close of day to you all.

Best regarde.
Alain.

Hello Alain,

Very interesting project! I would love to see more photos.
I always want to do a drydock diorama, but I work slowly, and have too many kits in stash..
How big will this be?

I will be watching this thread. :thumbs_up_1:

Well, that escalated quickly! :D

Looking forward to what you make of this, Alain, especially given your previous work! What year are you going to be doing Fuso in?

Beautiful, and another cool project.

The crane's got a 150t lift capacity (it may have been re-rated), and is one of three left in the world. It's been in operation for over 100 years. I think it may have also been moved to another location in the shipyard in recent years, away from the pier close to Drydock #2. Maybe some of these other images can be helpful in terms of layout. It's item # 5 on the map of the Mitsubishi yard.

FWIW, Fuso was modernized at Yokosuka, which also had one of these cranes. Hyuga and Kirishima were built at Nagasaki, but modernized elsewhere.

Thank you for your comments to this new project.

Dan K thank you for photos and plan. Despite having scoured the Web for information. Some pictures and plan are new to me.

The crane has a capacity of 150 t.

For Fuso, I'll go easier and make the latest version 1944.

Best regard
Alain.

Alain, I'm glad that information can be of some help. I wasn't sure how much of the surroundings you were planning to diorama, so I included some larger perspective. I might have some others, depending on the extent of what you're planning.

Hello,
Thanks much for your comments.

Now, I just finished mounting white buildings. The objective of this phase is to validate the parts drawing.

There are a few errors, but nothing dramatic:
- A section of roof that must be repeated for a mirror problem.
- It lacks the pillars for the large building that will be left of the diorama.
- Make interiors for some buildings
And on the crane redo the mesh of the vertical portion of the latter
In addition I draw other small cranes that are visible on the photos (on the edge of the dock).

The realization of buildings in PE we not clear to an internal structure to make the right PE and cubic formatting.

The feedback of this phase is that when it makes reliefs on one side (therefore 50% of the thickness of metal decrease) this exhibit a shapely making formatting complicated.

Conversely when the piece has no relief, the shape is flat. I will therefore take into account this experience for the design of future buildings. However I have not yet found the solution.

In the following pictures, the fixture is not finished, then the voids and gaps are normal.

Right now I'm going back to do the drawings change.

Very neat stuff:

Instead of doing the interiors in 3D PE, and as it is in 1/350, would it be easier to draw them up with colors and do them in paper or a 40lb index paper, like file folders, and the glue them in place with white glue?

I too will be following to see how this turns out.

Hello,

I just finished the installation of one of the important pieces of the diorama on the port of NAGASAKI. After two months of drawings and 5 days of installation I present to you the Mitsubishi Nagasaki 150 t crane.

It is very fragile in contrast relatively heavy because I used the brass of 0.3.

The vertical part is directed by two cages with beams between the two cages. I first mounted the inner cage then pasted the joists on the 4 sides to finally slide all inside the outer cage. It is played to the nearest tenth.

Personally, I find it successful, it will be painted in green, as shown in the map color by the time, I posted at the beginning of the presentation of the diorama.

Good to now place to photos:

Thereafter the buildings and dock cranes and trains. I have completed all of the drawings and received the EP except for the trains.
