Well I had not really planned on doing a build log of this project but things are turning out so well with this build I decided to share it with everyone, plus my son Chris urged me to do this. So, first impressions of the kit WONDERFUL, the kit is awesome and the PE set that comes with it is some of the best I have seen so far for kit supplied photo etch. Here are some pictures of things so far. Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: More to follow |

and here is more.............. Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: Attachment: And, that's all folks for the time being. I have been building this kit OOB and not focusing on making it as the most accurate build ever. I am doing this totally for fun just to get back into the grove of building SOMETHING!!!!!!!! My diorama project is still in the works but is temp on hold waiting on the new house to be finished, I just can't get past the idea of it getting messed up in transport and set up in the new shop. But I am keeping busy with this build and having a ton of fun, hey that is what it is all about. Right? As always thanks for viewing this topic and your comments and questions on this kit are very welcome. |

I really don't know how many others are building this kit or are planning to build this one but I will give you guys a little insight into this kit. When it first arrived I was like a silly school boy getting his first big assignment and knowing he is ready for the challenge. As I opened the box and looked over all the trees and examining the details of the molded injected plastic, I was very impressed with the quality that Hobby Boss put into this kit. As I was going through the box I came across the photo etch, I set it aside after a quick glance, grabbed the instructions and gave them a good once over, as I did so I quickly figured out that this was something I really needed to study as there was so many pieces of PE involved in nearly every build step, then all the subassemblies, Now, I am not a master model builder but I also at the same time am not to bad at building things. I realized studying the instructions that this was not only going to be fun but challenging as well, the PE in this kit is very well made, pre measured and the etching was done so the "bends" where easily made, I did however come across a few pieces that where a tad bit long and had to be modified to fit. It was simply a process of "clip, strip, stick, and set", many of you know how it goes. I have never used a PE set that was so "FORGIVING" I had dinged some railings and with a blade was able to nudge it back rather easily, something I always struggled with. The kit its self is something that can be made into a wonderful model, as this is one of my all time favorite ships I was over joyed to see a 1/350 "plastic" kit for it a scooped it up at first sight, the quality of the kit is some of the best I have seen for Hobby Boss Models, the fit of pieces is spot on, I have used very little filler and only when I did something wrong we all have those days. Pieces go together very well and very little clean up is needed on parts, most is at the tree connection points as always. So, if your thinking about this kit and not sure, or you have this kit in your stash, you are in for a treat when you start this kit. As far as accuracy I feel it is very, very close. I have viewed pictures of the ALASKA, GUAM and seems to me that the details are spot on, now since I am doing it OOB just for fun, you might research more in depth to find all the flaws you can and hammer this kit to pieces but I think HBM has done a great job since there are limited pictures of the ships showing great details. Best of luck and hope this little review is helpful. |

This is kit is very, very high indeed on my 'cannot live another day without' list. I will probably pick one up this next month or so. Looks very handsome so far. |

I promise you will not be disappointed, honestly I saw the ultimate detail set on line today and I can say it is impressive but with the quality of the kit its not needed, when I ordered mine the wood decking was out but not the ultimate PE kit, I opted to just use the kits supplied parts and I couldn't be more happier. Now, I might get another kit and all the aftermarket kits for it and build it as the GUAM. Martin, Thank you buddy. |

With this latest generation of Trumpeter and Hobby Boss kits I have been having such great experiences. My Voltaire is proving to be really nice and the Rodney was a breeze. Granted a big breeze. It is also to have a nice, modern kit of an American cruiser that is not an Indy or a New Orleans. Now, when can with get those Baltimores we were promised? Not that I wish to be greedy. I can't remember a better year to be a ship modeler. We even have a very nice Krusenshtern in 1/200 now. |

Strategos Augustus, You said it this is a great year for ship models we've had so many new kits come out that everyone has been bagging for and the powers that be are finally listening I honestly can't wait to get into my new house and get the stash unpacked and really get a massive amount of work done, between my diorama project and all the 350 kits I have purchased over the past two years it is going to be something to look forward to doing. I still remember my first 350 ship, of course it was the BISMARK Academy kit, built straight OOB and it looked great then I realized I had a ton to learn, but that was back in 1997 and I have done 20 or so since then but I focused the last 5 years on 700 scale building nearly 700 ships and subs for the diorama, it is great to build something that does not make me want to bang on the deck. |

In 1997 was when I was given my very first model kit. A Monogram B-17G that I built with my late father. I still have it, more or less intact. One of these days I will probably refit it since we never sealed the decals and they are flaking off. It is interesting that you should mention they Academy Bismarck. My first Bissy was an Academy as well and I saw this a few months back: Won Hui-Lee's rendition of the Academy Tirpitz http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery/bb/dkm/Tirpitz-350-whl/index.htm Wow, just wow. That is a real donkey of a kit and he brought it to life. So I found an auction on eBay and nabbed on for under $30 (what a steal) and I think I might have a go as well at some point. |

This is a very nice job! How long have you been working on this? This ship is on my to-do list. Just got other ships to build first...plus I need to finish the one I'm working on now. |

Itchy, I have been working on this build for about 1-1/2 months, but not steady I have maybe 60 hours into it. I am hoping to have it finished in the next couple of weeks. If I can get motivated to get back to the bench. I truly know what you mean about other ships to build, I a few hundred left in my stash to burn through. I had been building a massive amount of 700 scale (modern era) naval ships for my diorama but got burned out and stepped away for a while. I thank you very much for your compliment on this build, I hope you find it useful in build your ALASKA when you get to it. |

Hi there everyone, I have been working here an there on the ALASKA just getting some of the detail paint work done. I am also in the process of getting the secondary guns installed, then going back and getting the camo pattern transfer to those and painting them by hand. Most of the main build work is now completed and they {FWD Superstructure & AFT Structure} are getting very close to final attachment to the main deck. I am looking forward to getting these attached and move on to some more photo etch work, I still have the catapults and the cranes to get started on, and several other smaller bits and pieces to get made and installed. I am thinking I should have some nice pictures of the progress by Friday, tomorrow we {the CNC, CNC-in Law, & me} are heading to Portsmouth, Va. to find out if we are having a grand-daughter or grand-son, so not work on this build tomorrow. Well guys and gals I will check in later with a nice picture update. |

Guys things are still moving along with the ALASKA I'm waiting on some materials to come in so I can work on my weathering, I need to get that done so I can move on to more of the finer details that are needed to bring life to this ship. I am hopeful that the materials will be here in a week or so, we all know how shipping from overseas can be. |

G'day Jim Have you see Mike Ashey's review of the Alaska kit? You might find it useful with your build. http://www.mikeashey.com/SHIP%20KIT%20R ... REVIEW.pdf His review also identifies some minor fit issues and how to fix. Rod |
