Hello everybody,
Ever since the Hiei was more or less indefinitely postponed I started with a different model, though at a much slower pace.
This time I decided to take a ship from the stash, the HMS HOOD 1/350 from Trumpeter. (In the future a Bismarck with Pontos will follow
)
The idea was that the model should have some semblance to the 1941 may outfit of the ship but I don't desire total accuracy so do forgive me for taking liberties with reality here and there.
For extra details I bought the Eduard and Flyhawk detail and resin sets, which were complemented by an Artwox wooden deck and the Infini Royal Navy winches set.
I tried to find out which color would be fairly accurate in painting the ship. Biut apparently there is a lot of confusion and in the end I decided to go with XF-82 for the 507A, XF-24 for the Boat deck, XF-79 for the bridge decks and XF-09 Hull red for the Hull. I made a piece of paper on which I also tested XF-66 but I found xf-82 more blueish and more appealing to the eye.
The fit of the kit is modestly annoying to absolutely terrible in some places. The boat deck was warped, the hull required ducktape in order to force the 2 halves on each other, and at some places putty was needed to fill the seems. The fit of the shafts was not great as well, so putty was applied, and now it needs sanding.
The flyhawk set includes a sizeable amount of ammo lockers to be folded, these are really nice. The flyhawk PE in general looks nice, but bends a little too easily,
I also got some Flyhawk resin turrets with blastbags as replacement for the trumpeter turrets, these were not accurate in shape and didn't look good either in my opinion,
At this point I have a large amount of stuff done, Funnels, Mast and tripod are all built. What is left are the small things like life-boats, Pom-poms, quads and railings.
The Funnels and their bases are really nice, for the doors and Hatches i solely use Eduard, the railings are a mix, on the funnel base of the 2nd funnel It is flyhawk, most other railing currently installed is eduard, since these are easier to use as they are less flexible
The funnel caps are not aligned 100%, The forward cap was replaced because the eduard piece was really out of place, this one is better, but still mehh, don't think I'll replace it though.
This antenna was a pain to make, that it turned out like this without being one massive glue clog is something I am very happy about
And here she sits before the Yahagi and the Hamakaze,
Greetings and stay healthy,
Gerco
