Hello fellow modellers!

I thought I'd post some pictures of my model of the HMS Repulse. Bear in mind that everything is dry fitted at this point so some parts are not aligned very well. The Airfix model is really nice with a lot of details that makes it look good even when compared to newer models.

Hope you enjoy!

That looks great. The deck especially. How did you create the wooden deck effect?

Here's what I do for the wooden decks. I start by painting the deck a uniform "tan" color and I let dry for about 5 to 7 days. Afterward I use a wash of "earth brown" over the tan color. I then proceed to paint all the fittings and structures before doing the final wash of black (again I wait for a week).

That wash is applied liberally over the decks and structures and I wipe out the excess with a lint-free cloth. The black wash actually blends everything together and it gives some impression of shadows around the fittings. I still have to adjust my black wash because I feel it came out a bit heavy on the Repulse but it still looks good to my eyes.

I'll try to posts some more pictures soon. I'm currently rebuilding the aft shelter deck after neglecting that part for almost a year. Almost every major part of the Repulse are painted but that part was left mostly unattended because I was working up the courage to actually start butchering the kit part

Well it's been a long time coming but i finally have some new pictures to share with you :woo_hoo: I started detailing the conning tower deck assembly and hangar and I also glued the aft structure which will be detailled later. It took a long time to get there mainly because I keep repainting areas already done a while ago. This is mostly due to advices from some fellow modellers and new pictures of the 1937-38 period I've been able to get my hands on. When I started the build I thought all fittings on the ship were the same color as the hull and structures but I was wrong and it took me forever to see it.. actually it took only a picture to show it to me and afterward I was able to actually see this on many other photos and I had never realised it :doh_1: The bollards and other such fittings were painted in a dark color that looks like black.

The searchlights were also painted darker than the rest of the ship along with the cranes. At first I thought the dark crane was only due to a trick of the light but I have seen this in almost all the clear pictures I have of the ship in this time period. I have also repainted the top part of the catapult in dark grey because of a picture I found in the Ensign 8 book by Maurice Northcott. It's a rather small but clear aerial view of Repulse clearly showing the stripes on B turrets and without all those pesky awnings that always hide crucial details!! On this picture the top of the catapult track is very dark. The ends sticking out of the hull are also visible and painted in light grey. The sides of the catapults were also light grey as can be seen on some other pictures of the ship.

One other thing that jumped in my face when I checked this picture was the anchor chains painted in a very light color. I will probably paint the chains in the same light gray I used for the ship. It will cover the chains more easily than white! This picture also shows the wooden decks to be very very dark. On the foc's'le you can barely see the difference between the metal decking and the wooden part. Is it because of water on the decks that they look so dark? Is it possible that the decks were darkened somehow? I don't really have other shots showing all the decks of Repulse so I can't verify.

Another small update with the main superstructure dry fitted but almost ready to be glued in place. The searchlights and signal lamps are the new Veteran models fittings and some of them are just the right size for a 1/600 battlecruiser :cool_2: What luck!!

Thanks Martin! This kit is really a nice basis to work with. The biggest drawback being the lack of cutting edge fittings available for this scale. As it is, the Veteran searchlights make the rest of the model look a little bland :heh:
