I've started it sometime in the summer. That's where I'm now. I have both Eduard sets, extra P2Y's, boats and guns from Black Cat, deck from Woodhunter, plus some of my own PE and wooden decks for forecastle and stern. I'm hoping for some progress over the Christmas brake, but we'll see :wink_1:

Excellent and crisp work! I like the shading effect on the hull plating. You managed very well to keep the 'feel' similar on the grey, black and red areas, which is not that easy. :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Some progress on this front, all primed and ALMOST ready for paint:

Black Cat's boats and guns:

and the rest of the junk:

Them 3D bits require far more work than I anticipated, still they look cool enough :heh:

I have a dillema, it's time to ask wiser people :cool_1:
Problem is the color of P2Y's. Trumpy says they should be silver, but i have some doubts. They also could be in that earlier grey color, they were withdrawn from frontline service more less in the same time when the silver was introduced as the main aviation color. Does anyone KNOW haw was it with those P2Y's?
I also asume that Seagulls should be silver without any doubts?

Now the remainder of the 'junk' have to add some PE to it and it'll be time to paint ALL of it.....

Good progress, and a very nice forest of toothpicks and wires! :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:
That junk will make for excellent detail on the model.

A fascinating subject - the Langley. I'm interested in how they decided not to enclose the hangar deck - one would have thought that the reason to have the hangar deck is not simply storage of aircraft, but also aircraft maintenance, and having things open to the elements makes that somewhat more difficult to manage.

Well done on the detail bits! They add so much to a model!

I guess they were checking if the whole idea is viable at all, so the conversion was done cheapest possible way. After it proved useful Lex and Sara had nice enclosed spacious hangars

Looking awesome! I really like how subtle but visible the plating has become. Can you show some pictures of this?

Keep it up!

No problem, this is the sequence with hull red as an example:
1. Orange base over gray primer:

2. First shade, upper part of recessed streaks:

3. Second shade, same as above but narrower, closer to top.

Image

Image

4. Vertical plate joints, that is the end of recessed streaks. They need light filter of the base color. Them shades will take more layers of filter then the highlights, that's why the need first filter now, before being masked off.

5. First highlight, top parts of the protruding streaks.

6. Second highlight, same as above, narower towards the top:

7. Plate joints on the protruding streaks and everything unmasked, ready for final filter of the base color:

and in proper position

8. After final filter, job's done :cool_2: This color is a bit special, never looks same on the picture and in reality, but black and grey are done exactly the same way.

I hope it's helpful Bas.

Finally all that stuff painted in base colors. Only flight deck and planes left, but that'll come after all this is washed, weathered and put together..... Some fun ahead

Looking good!

Thanks for posting the painting process on the hull. I've got a VF Taiho in the works and I've been looking for ways to improve on my standard monotone red/monotone grey hulls. Based on your pictures, I think I might be able to pull your method off.

Post subject:  Re: USS Langley (AV-3), Trumpeter, 1/350

That VF Taiho would be very nice subject to do something like that. It makes unimpressive monotone hulls to 'pop out'. I'll gladly follow your efforts
I have 1/700 Taiho, full hull from Fujimi and quite a few add ons for it as well. But for her I'm going for what if green-green end of the war camo and planned air group with Reppus and Ryuseis...... someday :cool_2:

She's coming along nicely. That hull really pops.

Thanks Martin, I'm doing my best :cool_2:
Washes done on most of the stuff, only hull and boats left. I'm finally getting closer to real fun: weathering all that junk   :woo_hoo:
