Here is a wip of mine that has been sort of a pet project. It's based on one of the design studies leading up to Allen M. Sumner class destroyers. The hull and most of the superstructure is converted from a Tamiya 1/700 Fletcher kit. The superstructure had to be moved back which meant a lot of cutting and scratchbuilding but it's starting to get there. All the parts are dryfitted right now, which accounts for anything being off center or slightly skewed  I addition to the Fletcher parts, she has twin 5"/38s from a Dragon Essex kit (yes, the same one being converted into Oriskany), gun tubs and 40mm directors from a Trumpy Franklin kit, twin 40mm from Tamiya's USS Bogue, Gun directors, torpedo tubes and depth charge racks from Skywave and PE from Tom's Modelworks. She is maybe 25% complete right now. So far it has been a very fun project and it is certainly a change of pace from all my other meticulously researched builds! I'm quite addicted to Never-were/What-if builds so look for some more soon. :heh:

So that's what you've been doing while AWOL huh?! Looks like you're getting the basics down & she's coming along nicely :thumbs_up_1:

At last, a long overdue update! Here the gun tubs, torpedo tubes and some rails have been mounted, along with the Mk 37 5-inch director and other small details. The forward deckhouse has all the rails added, while the aft deckhouse has only the port rails added. Once I finish adding the rails, I will paint her and then add the mast and 40mm and 20mm guns and she will be done! Questions, comments etc. welcome as always...

This looks really interesting and extraordinary, Avery!

Is it a WHIF or is it a real ship that existed or at least existed on paper?

It's a Whif, Carl, he's taken the work from design studies that were done pre-Sumner as research, and thus it's a paper-ship to a degree, and the Whif would be "what if they'd used a different design study for building the Sumners" or such.

Ave, looking beautiful, man. I've got a Gearing Whif that I'm going to do eventually with 54cal's and 3" guns, sort of a Post-Sumner whif for a heavier AAW destroyer in an extended WW2 scenario.

EDIT - why no lower aft mount? I'm guessing your design study lacked one? It looks a little barren along that section, you might consider something to improve on it perhaps.

Just curious, why that choice of antenna for the main director? Actually, what antenna is that? Looking pretty cool!

Thanks for the comments and the interest guys :wave_1:

She is based on a design study for the Sumner, so she is sort of a whif, more of a might-have-been.

Simon, there will be a twin 40mm mount below the aft 5" mount, it is oddly placed, and I'm debating putting it on the opposite side of the deckhouse from the 40mm by the aft funnel. We shall see.

Timmy, the antenna is just a standard Mk-37 but it's from the Trumpy Essex kit and it's sort of squashed, but I didn't have anything better.

You know, with the width of the fantail, you could always go for broke and up the twin to a quad. You're tempting me to do a bash between a Fletcher and a Gearing, things like the twin waist Bofors, giving it a more symmetrical layout. Ah well, I guess I get to build another one eventually. It should look pretty interesting though.

Looking forward to yours being done!

She is almost done. Just have to rail the fantail and paint and she'll be finished! Too dark to take pics now, but tomorrow (assuming warmth and relative dryness) I'll post pics with paint. Thanks again for all the comments! Simon, you'll see what I did on the fantail when pics come... :heh: :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:
