Hello,
Here I am back with the work of the day.

First the crane on a barge YD-98 to 1/350th. It is superb with its spire of 135mm. Really a very big beast. I must return to the drawings to modify some things: the angle of the arrow which I find too straight and the system at the top of the arrow for the pulleys and cables.

Then a simple barge that will be filled with various boxes, parts and other structures metallic.

Image

On the diorama of the crane and barge position will be as follows:

Image

Image

Next to the barge, a tug at Alliance Model Works there (I en had already mounted 3 on the Diorama of the Mulberry).

After I try it on a crane 100t 42 m. For this I am part of the crane from Model Alliance Works to 1/700eme. It is not fine (I have to draw and finish the engine system in the middle of the barge and the detail of the two post handling together with cables and lifting mechanisms.

I'm not yet on to this crane on the diorama. In its place I planned to put an APL.

Image

Cabin on barge. It is drawn and I expect boards to do a test fitting. However it will be a big beast of 245 width 45 mm.

For the crane YD-98, the barge and the APL I'm partial drawings to 1/700 Jean (Migou31).

Okay now that everything is in its place, I'll finalize all of the dock.

Best Regard
Alain.

Hello,

Here, I finally finished the fitting of a side of the doc. What discourages me is telling me that there is still one to do. But good with patience yet 2 or 3 weeks of work.

I started by putting in place 800 guides of the Raceway of the cranes, then 100 round plates of obstruction, 120 elements, anchors, etc, etc.

You will also notice the rows of lamps that are indoors and on the upper side pontoons.

Vertical pontoon are in place, but not glued. I'll paste them after painting. Gaps between the horizontal section and the pontoons will be concealed with boxes or other items.

I made of metal structures in PE. Do I not asked who they serve. I do not know. But they are on the photos of the time.

There are 2 rounds shacks up with 2 inclined stairs from the top to bottom 2 vertical pontoons to end.

I also put small PE up to hide the gaps between each pontoons.

I receive within 1 to 2 days the rest of the EP as well as the APL (Baraque barge).

Go, place photos.

Hello.

Boards of PE having arrived, I devoted myself these last three days to the mounting of the APL.

APL being a cabin on barge intended for the staff of the Dock. For those interested here attached link Navsource with this type of material:

http://www.navsource.org/archives/09/71/7102.htm

The initial boards 1/700 was designed by Jean (Migou31) there is quite a year in the context of the dio on Mare Island.

I picked up and modified these designs to an APL 1/350th. Although that my installed mounting many problems, I am rather pleased with the result knowing that there are still many things to do to get the desired result.

First Assembly of the base frame. In the foreground the side of the hull. In the background the shape of the top of the ship.

Image

The mounting of the first elements (frame, side and top shape.

Image

Holes have been a first step in patching with PuTTY Price August.

Image

Image

Image

Image

And at the time the second side of the APL. The disillusionment. When drawing I well a rotation of the shape, but I was not vigilant enough on the management of the symmetry of the sides. On the picture below we see must be indoors.

Image

A picture to show the bobbin effect created by Jean. Simply pass a brush handle pressing more or less to have the desired effect. It's great.

Image

For me, it's back screen to change drawings. I'll take the opportunity to edit the designs of barges and create 2 or 3 others.

Best Regard.
Alain.

Interesting photo of the barracks ship at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. Probably used at that time for housing ships crew while overhaul was underway. The dock in question was where all the yard tugs hung out, in the back, the famous Hammer Head Crane, which is still a prominent feature of the local skyline. It was particularly useful for removal of Battleship rifles for relining.

Very interesting project!

Cheers: Tom

Hello.

The final straight before the end of the installation of the floating dock. Almost everything is mounted, there was only the cranes to be finalized.

Version 3 of the drawings is good.

The mounting of the bases of the cranes. And increasingly they adapt very well to the rail.

Image

The cabins. I have detailed interiors. Nothing will be visible once fitted. But during previous tests, I noticed that the vacuum was really too blatant.

Image

Then the arrow. It is this last that brought me so many problems. She is so fine that you need for mounting of the folds for formatting without forcing. I found this wonderful version.

Image

For gluing of the crane, I used Pikes as oil recommended by Nicolas (Eve, the BOSCO). A real pleasure to use. It changes lives.

Image

There are different sizes. I vary the quantity of glue to apply. The most abundant yellow, blue and black for the smallest. Cleaning being any two or three uses with the flame of a lighter.

Image

Okay now photos of the famous crane. However, there is still some things to add, but it's the margin.

Good tomorrow, I ride the second crane and I finish the installation of the dock by the end of the week.

Best regard.
Alain.

Hello

Here, both the floating dock cranes are completed. A good outlet head. But what a pleasure.

On the other hand, they are very fragile. I hope not to make too many suffer during painting.

Now it only remains for me only twenty railing to mount, and I move to the stage painting in the Dock.

What great work...how I wish your barge cranes were on the market, they are perfect miniatures of the cranes I see on docks and slipways all over. Your Mulberry diorama also was a wonderful piece of work. I look forward to more postings on this one.

Hello.

First, thank you all for your comments and participation in this post.

I finished the entire Assembly of the Dock. Phew. A big step from crossed for the advanced of the diorama.

As I am quite be dispersed in the earlier phases via the dock, then on barges, then on barges, cranes etc. But hey, when this phase of creation of the PE, I was very eager to each arrival of PE boards.

I will therefore now I concentrated on Assembly of the BB-59

These are the photos of the beast and it advanced General of the diorama.

Awesome ! I love it and can't wait to see more.

That reminded me of when we were in the yards in 80-81 and we moved to an APL-19 for berthing. It was cold, very cold ! Floating motel indeed it was. We had some pranksters who would shut off the steam valve for the heat and in the middle of winter with icebergs coming down the river it got cold. Christmas day I woke up to see my own breath as I lay there in my rack fully dressed and extra blankets. One of the guys came along with a bottle of Jack, said "Merry Christmas, it's 28 degrees in here, have a hit". Yes the good ol' APL-19. I wouldn't mind making one for my collection.

Thanks for the memories and keep up that excellent work,

Keith

Incroyable! Absolument magnifique, Alain. Je souhaite que je pourrais construire des maquettes de bateaux ainsi. Vous êtes vraiment un maître.

With those extra blankets you had to use, it sounds like the prankster was asking for a blanket party. :heh:

Of course in my entire 20 years in the Army, we were all absolute angels. Being total professionals at all times, there was never a prank and never any blowback. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
