My semi-scratchbuild of the SS Vondel, a small colonial liner of 1906. Like most evil things (109s anyone?) I have found colonial liners always very attractive modelling subjects with their open shade decks and complicated awnings . Pre-airconditioning this was the only way to to make the long stretches of Red Sea and Indian ocean bearable for the passengers. Vondel was one of a trio of modern looking liners build with an eye to attracting French and British passengers away from P&O and Messageries Maritimes, with Colombo and Singapore being major stops on the way to the Indies. At the end of her career she was replaced by the combination liner Poelau Laut which I have also done, she can be found in this thread viewtopic.php?f=74&t=73052. Like that project Vondel was build in Balsa/styrene. This time I used lots of parts of Titanic kits and Titanic PE sets with some cigarette paper thrown in. The PE made it possible to do reasonably convincing Welin Quadrant davits this time. The model was based on scanned microfilm plans from the Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam.
