Here is my 1/700 USS South Dakota what-if build. I modernized her to be a Command and Control type ship set in the early to mid 80's just before being retired. I had an old Hasegawa South Dakota kit that I got for next to nothing as a parts kit. It was missing two turrets and several other pieces. I decided to try out some scratch building and just have a fun build. I removed all the molded on detail aft of the funnel area. I used a section of flight deck from another parts kit I had of a modern 1/800 scale carrier. I used styrene sheet to scratch build the hanger. I used more styrene to add a new section to the forward superstructure up to where the second turret was located. I removed a lot of other detail from the kit and added modern items from my parts stash. I used some Trumpeter helicopters from my stash and some extra decals to finish her off. This was a really fun build and I learned a lot of good stuff to use on future builds. Here she is.
