IJN Mikasa sets sail. Historically accurate? Dunno. Built as an out of box kit with PE parts trade offs. It's as accurate as Hasegawa made the kit.

Very nice model indeed. Regarding battleship Mikasa, I wonder what differences apart from the paint scheme there are between the 3 key events of her early service life: 1. Commissioning in 1902, 2. Battle of the Yellow Sea and 3. Battle of the Sea of Japan (Tsushima). From what I can see from contemporary sources, in 1902, she sported a rather spartan Victorian livery of black hull, light grey superstructure (or was it white?), black funnels and buff masts and possibly the two bridges, unless they were white (or Gray) like the rest of the superstructure. By the time the war with Russia began, she had been repainted in medium/dark gray as often seen on models like this one. But what about the non livery-related changes, if any? Besides the elimination of the fighting tops on both masts, and the trimming-down of the forward air vents, I have not found much to guide someone who would want to backdate a Mikasa kit from 1905 to 1902, apart from the paint job. Any thoughts?

Thank you Marijn. Jean-Paul, I wish I could answer your question. Hope someone does so I can learn a t lest a little bit about the evolution of the color schemes. As Martin and the rest of our club can attest to the fact that in the vast majority of my builds I know little about the subject. I like to build, pure and simple. Happy to learn about the subject as I go along though. Most of what I know about this iteration is on the box. 1905 Battle of the Sea of Japan. Whatever inaccuracies Hasegawa put in the kit… they are still there. |

JP, have you tried comparing the Hasegawa pre and wartime kits? They include several points of differences: you already mentioned the removal of vent cowls and fighting tops, but other changes they included were removal of the gunshields for the anti-torpedo guns and changing the number of yardarms on the masts. While kits aren't a great way to confirm ship configurations, in this case they provide a good start for "what to look for" in actual photos of the real ships. |
