Comes with small PE set but instructions are available for placement. Decal sheet is very nicely done with decal for stand for ship ( but I'll use something else ).

It also comes with a small squad of helos.

Starting work with hanger decks, you have the option of doing it, but probably cover it up with elevator doors. One thing to NOTE: The FD and elevators partially have tie downs :thumbs_up_1: , but they also have mid-size etchings of where white markings for FD will go :Tirade: :Mad_6: . Will need to fill that a bit, but how???? :scratch:

I'm thinking of getting putty that I can 'water down' like spackle....so I'll try the Vallejo white putty, it looks like a white mixture that can clean up with water....just to fill in those 'troughs' we see on FD of carrier catapults.

But for the elevator on the bottom of hanger area....I don't think I'll do anything but paint.

I'm going to go a little further with making a partial interior hanger, so I scored out the folding door, to cut and smooth out.

Depending on how deep the engravings are, it might be worth it to use the engraved markings on the flight deck as cutting guides for a mask: paint the deck in the dark grey, then mask the marking areas with tape, cut out the markings using the engravings as your guide, then just paint.

This is such an annoying part of building the ship. Use tape to limit what parts of the deck get putty because you want to preserve those tie-down dots. I even put a thin bit of tape inside the landing markings to preserve the dots there. After you have puttied everything wait at least a full 2 days before sanding it down because putty shrinks and if you sand too soon you will still have the ditches, just a little shallower. If you are using a thinned putty, you probably need a couple applications before it will be filled enough. Sand slowly, and every once in a while make sure the dots are still there and enlarge them if they start to get sanded away.

The Pit Road kits of DDH 183/184 are even worse in this regard.

'Timmy C', thanks for the tip....I kind-a did do that, in a sense of painting the deck first, mask the FD to paint the rest of That deck.....I'll try to mask that little strip with blue painters tape....( I think I finally found a tape that doesn't lift the paint I just placed!! :mad_1: {which seems to be a problem for Many Modelers} ).

As for 'sepjic', I will follow that advice as well....during this "Crisis" I found to be Much more patient in waiting for things to cure and tighten up when doing my builds. :thumbs_up_1: . And yes, I know what you mean about the FD of Pitroad kits.....I had to shave/sand down those Raised markings on Haruna & Shirane kits (especially around the non-skid areas) and the FD as well. But with Hyuga and the Kaga kit I will be doing during the summer there are Many of those 'trenches' on the FD.

Advice from both is Much appreciated, thanks for helping me with my kits :cool_1: :jump_1:

I was a little bit under-the-weather.....I think it was something I ate, but on with the build... :surfer: .

Here is the work on JS Hyuga hull, the reason I spray the hull a Gloss Black, is to allow the area to be smooth so that I can mask the waterline. This is the MAJOR Problem for me in doing my builds of ships, I tried scotch tape, masking tape (brown stuff), even taping areas separately then painting :mad_1: :censored_2: [you get my drift], I even tried decals of strips, rounded areas!!! :huh: . So I paint the area black, in general, then mask off the blacken area to paint the hull red.....it seems to work okay for me!

But here I also stiffen up the struts of the shafts leading up to the screws of the ship.

Much care needs to be taken because I don't want to damage the shaft supports where the brass rod will go THROUGH!! :eyes_spinning: . I use a small pin drill....Size is a #61 or #62 (0.039 mm - 0.038mm respectfully) :big_eyes: depending on the size of the support.

I drill through both sides at a time, first one end then the other, hopefully meeting!! ( only once in another build I totally missed ) :lol_3:

The rod is a 0.032 (0.81mm) brass rod Stock #1602 from K & S Engineering, it gives me five (5) pcs/bag, more than enough to build several ships...( in fact I used one rod to build five [5] ships so far ). This is narrow in size to 'play' around in fitting the brass to the ship, thru the support and to the end support near the screw of the ship. I like it because it just gives it more "Solid" structure!! :thumbs_up_1:

Finished product....takes about 20 minutes for each shaft, with most of the time drilling out the first support nearest hull, then drilling out a little bit on support for screw.

'Dan K' thanks for the comments.....I like to put as Much detail that I Can Do...at my age (50+, but Way under 60 :wave_1: ). I think when I do a build I would spend about 70% of my time researching a topic. I would spend so much time researching a ship, at times it would take me YEARS to build one ship (for example my MIDWAY CV-41 or my CORAL SEA CV-43). At least with my recent build 'Ibuki' (fictional CV), Haruna, and Shirane those ships were around for "a short time"....just enough for me to take a look at a several photos.



On with the build....the next thing I will post is the hanger deck....before and after, then Way after!!! :heh:

I have looked at a some recent photos of Hyuga and I was a bit interested about the Marine Osprey landing that 'carrier'/helicopter destroyer during early-mid 2010s. But More importantly, I want.....>> WHOA << effect with my builds! Though Hyuga kit has been around very few kits are built in 700 scale, and I have seen a few 350 scale DDH-181's. One that caught my eye was a build that somebody had a lit hanger bay...........Hhmmmmmm, can I do that???!! :scratch: Never built a kit with electronics, let alone starships with lit windows, so I going to give it a shot....Heck, I might even detail inside that hanger....stay toon!! :dead: :roll_eyes: :eyes_spinning:

So....I'm going to try to build a lighted interior, since I have ZERO experience in electricity ( at least on models ), I find this a neat little/grand challenge. For starts to build a hanger deck for this scale requires quite a bit of innovation, I like putting in details in my models and can handle PE quite well, I find, again, that getting the right photos is quite important, but also I like to add details that most people find excessive!

Here we have the aft hanger bay, the elevator moves by a large hydrolic piston that moves cables similar to our carriers...but here it is more noticeable

Here you can see a un-modified hanger bay, except for the paint job, I cut around the hanger bay door, but unfortunately I cut the wrong one :Mad_6: , I will try to patch the rear door later. I'm still waiting for putty that I will try to use to cover-up those landing lanes, on the FD as well as on elevator.

The structures around the way-upper part of the hanger bay, I Believe are lights and/or locks for the elevator, I will not be lighting those, but instead the hanger bay itself.

Here are some more pix after about a weekend of work, this is a pretty big dump.

Here I high-lighted the upper works of lights after seeing a few photos, much railings are around the those lights, I am Still using Artist Hobby leftover railings (the gold ones) the silver ones are GMM, I wondering if I should keep the railings Unpainted....by preference, they should be painted black as with the rest of the hanger bay being exposed to the 'outside environment'.

Now....some of the craziness....I will attach cable lines to raise/lower elevator (not that I will be raising/lowering elevators { I wonder....has anybody done That YET??!! :thinking: :worship_1: }.

The 'cables' that I will model will be from this fishing thread in making fishing flies. VEEVUS is the name of the product ( suppose to be used for modeling rigging, but I find this thread to look good enough for cables ), the size of thread diameter (I think) is 16/0, whatever that means. Here I painted the thread with MM 'Oily Steel' paint, by just dipping the thread into paint and dragging it on the top of the paint bottle.

In this photo you can kind-a see the cable placement, I placed a maintenance pathway above the piston gear engine, a bit behind the cables.

I'm waiting for my electronics to come in, then testing them out ( I have various colors that I will be testing {for other projects??} and sizes as well ). I have already drilled out the holes on the ships hull and on the bottom of the "waterline plate" (this is part of the model that is molded onto the kit, it is not a separate part that you would glue on......also it will be difficult to remove anyways).

Since I am waiting on electronics kit to come in for lighting of the hanger deck....I'll move on, starting with the mast!

There is MUCH detail to be had....for one access doors are a bit elusive as well as the way the rails are bent is always a challenge. But I find it is necessary to put railings on those masts, I find just about All model kits don't show railings up there. Being a retired sailor working with radars (I'm an Operation Specialists as a rate in the Navy), going up to those radars platforms in the Navy and Volunteering on USS IOWA BB-61, I ALWAYS see railings on those mast { can you image....going up that high and not having anything to catch you?? [and yes you would have a harness attached, but Still!! :big_eyes: ].

Alright!!! I got my lights.......will be testing out a VERY Small series of LED lights to see how bright, what color arrangements, which Size will be suitable for a hanger deck of a 1/700 scale ship!!! :thinking: :thinking: :thinking:

I did receive them the other day, but my eyes needed some rest, and it is a good thing I did!!! The lights are EXTREMELY SMALL!!!!! :lol_3: :big_eyes:

I just hope that I don't go crazy putting this together, since this is my First Ever Attempt at something like this!!! :crazy:

Wish me luck on this.......and of course I'll be showing photos of work-in-progress and finished work on lights. I must admit, these are not just any LED's, and what I hope to accomplish will....be........ :faint: :yeah:

I'll be posting more of my mast detail later and start work on the hanger deck enclosure itself this week.

I will be detailing the island of JS Hyuga....the PE I've selected is from Artist Hobby 'Ibuki' set....I do have the Aoshima JMSDF DDH Hyuga PE parts, but there is something that I don't like about Aoshima!

The PE is quite sturdy, almost as 'thick' as the PE from PitRoad when I was building JS Haruna and Shirane ( those have already been posted ). It seems to be a complete set of railings, netting, even PE for rotors folded (no unfurled rotors, sorry), a Nice set of instructions on placing railings with Pictures and PE part#'s :thumbs_up_1: It even has the railing going up the mast, although it is missing one platform that I included (and came with the PitRoad Hyuga kit) that I have posted pictures in above posts... But the thing I Don't like is the railings....as with most PE railings that I have used...GMM, WEM, Tom's, PitRoad, they All have that rail at the bottom to attach to your model. In Aoshima, they have Vertical POSTS, that the horizontal railings are attach to, making it unique, but difficult for me to attach to the model :censored_2:!!!

So, again I am using Artist Hobby...AGAIN to match up the railings/nettings on Hyuga. Even though the pictures on Aoshima PE set is useful, I can not use those rails!

Artist Hobby does come with a couple of flag bags for the ships, I trim/cut off the ladders going up that flag bag/signals area. Artist Hobby does come with enough ladders for the edge of the catwalks, and even ladders of different lengths ( the longest ones were actually for the 'rear end' of the Ibuki kit....and also for Izumo-class ships.

If wondering why it looks off-kilter.... I have let to glue in place, just test-fitting for now. I will be placing vents around the island soon, but the Izumo-class/'Ibuki' kit have vents that are in different arrangement, different sizes, and more numerous. Will need to look for another source of vents :twitch: :cry_3:

This upper-portion of the mast took at least a couple of days to analyze, decide what parts to put on, where to find those parts, and then put together. Couple cups of coffee helped :crazy:

I'm still waiting for the lights package to show up.....so in the meantime, I'll continue with adding the vents around the island and the hull.

As mentioned before, I have been using Artist Hobby 'Ibuki' PE for Tamiya Ibuki DDV ship....I find this a Very Well Detailed set for what it delivers for the Japanese DDH of the Hyuga- & Izumo-class ships. I will be using this set for my JS Kaga DDH-144 when I build her next, but in these photos I want to point out that, strangely, the Hyuga might have a few more vents around the island ( and not the ones on the sides of the island, but 'internally'). Even though the PE set does have quite a few vent covers, I came up short, so I remembered having an old L'Arsenal set of ship fittings that I will use.

These doors that I have placed around the lower part of the island are from GMM.

Here is the L'Arsenal set....it pretty much saved me from opening up Kaga set of PE and buying yet Another set of Ibuki, just to finish Kaga.

Some of the PE is missing because I used another set of vents from This PE for my FORRESTAL-class ship (that I put away for awile) in making vents around the island for That ship.

If anything....I need to trim a bit of the L'A set....but the rest of the vents from ArtHob, I'll use for the hull.
