Post subject:  1/350 Yamato (Updated 09 Apr 2020 COMPLETE!)
well after my experience with the musashi i think its time move on to the yamato (ten ichigo style)!
List of what is in the build:
-1/350 Yamato
-PE Lionroar
-PE Eduard
-PE GMM
-2x 5in AA set from Veteran models
-3x Veteran models Trip 25mm AA
-Veteran model voice pipes and binoculars
-Shinsegumi wooden deck

There will some scratch build stuff too...

UPDATE 08 APR 2020
FINALLY, after 13 YEARS of on an off building she is DONE! :jump_1: In a truly emotional moment the chrysanthemum crest is on and Yamato 1946 is finally completed. The crest in fact is part Z1 from the new mold kit, which will duly be replaced with the Pontos cast crest.
Its been a really long journey since the start. Come to think of it, Japan couldve made 4 Yamatos in the time it took for me to build this one. Hopefully when I get around to doing the new mold ship it wont take this long....

UPDATE 14 SEPT 2016
Ship is now around 85% complete. The rocket launchers were a total pain to build but it will pale in comparison to the triple type 96 mounts....

UPDATE 30 May 16

A small update with a few progress shots. Unfortunately due to work I havnt been able to spend much time on it....
Fortunately though I have a friend who is keen on pushing me to spend more time working on this almost decade old project ...... :/

I decided to redo the crane as the original one was warped from sitting around for almost 10 years.....Unfortunately the LionRoar instructions were rather poor.

The crane dry fitted on the stern. The AA platform was transplanted from the New Tool kit

The windows were painted sharply black before the repaint....looks like ill have to paint it now with a toothpick......

FINALLY after months of no progress due to school I finally managed to find time to work on the big Yam again...

most of my latest progress was spent on modifying the structure at behind the bridge. Tamiya's rendition was too skinny so after hours of research and consultation of the AOTS as well as the Kure model I scratch built an extension to the structure.
skinning the deck with diamond plated PE was an adventure....had to combine 2 sections of unused deck from eduard and basically cut out the shape...took along time but the end product looks pretty decent...

btw...does anyone know of a site with walkaround pics of the Kure model? the one that i had was taken down... :(

Looking very,very good. I really like what you have done already. Just in case you happen to mess apice up (PE) I bought the lionroar kit and am building the Musashi so I'll have some extra parts. If I have it I'll send it to you. But looking at your work you probably won't need it.

Thanks to the updated drawings from the Model Art Yamato book,
now in my pursuit to get the most accurate model as possible, the rear overhanging platform now needs to be hacked up and remodeled to look like the drawings.... sigh...hope it wont become an expensive mistake

After a long break due to Officer training in the Canadian Forces I finally found some time to resume construction...
Progress so far is approx at an amazing 15% done!! yay.... -_-
I think at this rate Ill be done sometime next year...

Anyways heres the latest progress shots

Well after many months of collecting dust due to school I finally started to work on the ship again
Latest shots are of the bridge structure
Changes:
-remodeled rear overhang to reflect on new findings on Model Art Yamato book
-all "sticks" replaced w/ proper binoculars and sighting equipment
-PE railings and parts by Lionroar, Eduard, GMM, Veteran
-scratchbuilt rear crew readiness room (enlarged over the original mold)

right now I'm trying to get the funnel and rear superstructure done up; will post more asap
Hopefully Ill get the momentum going, to get as much done as possible b4 school restarts

So finally after about 6 years in the freezer I've decided to finally finish this ship.
However seeing that I've kind of lost the motivation to completely "accurize" this ship to Ten Ichigo config
i've decided to buy a new tool Yamato and do that. in the meantime for this one, I'm going to try and do something few have done on this forum
and do a 1946 Wif version complete with shielded mounts for all the type 89s (I used the ones from the earlier posts on my Maya)
and as many 25mms trips as possible (using the Lionroar resin turrets and kit ones). I'm going to try to do a late war camo paint scheme, something akin to the one
used for zuikaku or shinano. Anyone got any suggestions on what else I can do?

And now for some WIP pics.....


















Well I got none yet....but stay tuned...hopefully I can get some on if I have time

Heh, in all seriousness, it would certainly look interesting to see what Yamato would have looked like if she'd not been sent on that suicide mission and made into a floating battery (akin to what you plan, and what was done for other battlewagons and heavy cruisers). The different greens, grays and other colors will certainly turn a head or two, just on their own... :thumbs_up_1:

Gosh...I cant believe its been 3/4 of a year since I promised to post pics.

But anyways I finally found some decent spare time to work on it....
at this rate they wouldve been able to build both ships CONSECUTIVELY and still beat me to finishing a model of it....

For some reason, the paint callouts for the Tamiya Shinano that I based my camo from gave a turquoisy green for the lighter shade, even though I added another 3 parts of green on top.
I guess the small bit of blue determined the overall colour. O Well...it is a whiff so who knows....They could've developed a super sayan shade of green that hid them from view nicely....
Then again they are the Japanese ..... :flamed: The side profile of the late war CV camo doesnt really look as good on a battleship than on the carriers, so maybe Ill add stripes later on down the road to dress it up. First I have to finish major construction which is really being hampered by the fact that the Lionroar PE scaling for some of their parts are really off and require correction (the tower crane and stern AA platform for starters...) I was also hoping to be able to acquire some Veteran Model rocket launchers like the ones on the Pontos Musashi but apparantly Mr Kim has bought out their entire inventory the last time I asked him.....Does anyone know the contact info of VM? I'll post more pics when I have the time to. Feel free to comment :)

Outstanding work. Very nice. I admire your perseverance (and perhaps perversely) to first take on Musashi, then immediately upon completion of that project, begin the Yamato. I doff my cap.

I finally able to get some time in to complete the installation of all the shielded Type 89 DP AA guns. This was also my first experience with using wood decking so that was a chore and a half.
I used the Shinsegumi Ver.2 deck since I didn't want any of the circular holes for the on deck mounts as well as the punchouts for the single type 96 mountings that was incorrect for the 1945 fit.
What I ended up getting myself into though was a bare deck that I had to modify significantly just to fit, including trimming the edges and cutting out the sections where the scupper drains were (these were already done in the ver. 1 deck) Fortunately I had the ver. 1 deck as a template and many hours later it you can see the results in the uploaded pics in the first post.

Good news also, as VM announced that they will sell the IJN late war rocket launchers in open and shielded mounts (see the post in the vendor thread) so it looks like I'm going to but a couple sets :)

Since this was a Whif Yamato I figured it was only fitting to add some whif armament. Behold! IJN rocket launchers found on late war vessels

I plan to also have some open mount rocket launchers as well including the turret mounts. Does anyone know if these launchers were any good in AA?

After a summer of little progress I finally had the time to complete the open mount rocket launchers and other parts of the superstructure.
Long story short, these launchers are a piece of work...I spent many frustrating profanity laced hours putting together these things...

Also for some reason despite following the same ratios I couldnt get the exact shade of light turquoise from the first batch....it was more "swampy green"

so in order to paint match I had to repaint the hull again...but not before I dropped my air compressor onto the aft Fire control tower while fumbling for the light switch.... :(

Overall, Im finally starting to see the light outside the tunnel. All thats left is the mast, stern crane, railings rigging and other small details.
