Sooo....

Just when I promised myself a short sharp project.....

Not cured of my French pre-dreadnought fever by the 1/700 Carnot build....

viewtopic.php?f=59&t=48865

I have now started the 1/350 BOUVET--the culmination of the the semi class that Carnot and Massena were members of

( see here Massena)
http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/sh ... eview.html

The Bouvet kit in the box I reviewed here at MW.com

http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/sh ... eview.html

and ... as the starting point looks so good I thought...

' here is a quick build '.....

Well it would have been...--but I wanted my Bouvet to be set at anchor/buoy, booms and boats out, an awning--set in the Mediterranean, black and yellow....

Its a long journey from here....!!

It all starts like this:

The casting is ' waterline'-- but only a near waterline....

Bouvet build 01.jpg
Bouvet build 01.jpg [ 49.92 KiB | Viewed 6448 times ]

=> so--according to the Plans from the French archives and after viewing a number of photos--I applied some clear tape to the hull and checked the tape line for fairness- when satisfied I drew a pencil along the line

The sanding ' could' be done by hand--but I prefer machines!

Attachment:
Bouvet build 02.jpg
Bouvet build 02.jpg [ 157.07 KiB | Viewed 6448 times ]

more detail how that is done can be seen here:

viewtopic.php?f=4&t=18213

With the hill perfectly fair I drilled the Barbettes for eventual screwing down of the model and screwed a few selftapping screws into the underside of the hull so that I could attach my spring clamp for easy handling.

the Butchery begins....

Open hatches ... are a pain.

To get the edges REALLY sharp is actually really rather hard-- so I drilled DEEP holes, cleaned up the edges with a microchisel and Stanley blades, blowing out the debris with the airbrush.

Attachment:
Bouvet build 06.jpg
Bouvet build 06.jpg [ 56.27 KiB | Viewed 6448 times ]

I inserted a PE 'frame' to give sharp edges,-- ( from the L'arsenal Libert ship 1/350 PE set- handrails )

These were cut into small squares--wasteful--but effective....

Installed with CA, pre-bent where the hull curves, and the edges filled with fine grain knifing putty filler.

When dry I pared away the excess with a blade-

after a guide wash of paint it looks like it could be pretty sharp once the hatches have been applied

a bit more filling and paring will make them look really good!

I have the benefit of the ' extra' PE fret available from YS Masterpieces-
-which also features the pierced grating PE bridge deck.....

The hatches will need to be cut in half--top and bottom halves-and applied to the apertures...

quick build eh...? :heh:

So far... so good....

More soon

Bloody hell Jim... Dont you ever stop!!??

If you want a quick build, I have an unstarted Akula Class sub from Blue Water Navy you could just assemble and airbrush.... should be done in a day... Shall I send it over to you...?

I think the insane levels of corrections, detailing and just general figuring out what is what you have started with Carnot and will now continue into Bouvet could do with a rest for a few days while the rest of us catch our breath... :thumbs_up_1:

The more I play with this model--the more I like it.

I sorted all the parts today and started to clean up the castings-
-some of the surface detailing on davits really is very nicely done indeed!

One of the things that often lets down some otherwise fine ( resin) models both 1/700 and 1/350 that I have seen at shows is the inevitable solid funnel.... I can understand the trepidation that a builder may feel--it is often a oneway street if the funnel gets wrecked....

That said-- all one needs is a mini drill and some SHARP cutting tools--I use original Dremel parts-they seem to hold the edge longest--they are also correspondingly expensive!!

Bouvet funnels - beautifully cast... but solid....

You are a brave man. I get really nervous working with resin like that. I lost a perfectly good gun shield to over aggressive grinding.

It took ages to finish the hatches on the stb side--plus I had to buy another fret from L'arsenal ( the last one!! )...

but I kept distracting myself with more interesting bits also...

The midships Q/F gun deck-- although originally planked-- was --according to photos--covered in Lino - prior to all other deck having lino- I rather fancied not having it all wood, a bit of colour and contrast.

I took the original part--and pared away the planks with a sharp Stanley plade until flat

the aforementioned ' extra fret'...

contained a rather nice piece of PE bridge deck--the same one used for making the master casting. I rather liked the idea of having the bridge grating penetrated with real holes-so cut away the ( perfectly cast) resin bridge deck from the back of the pilot house

Great to see something in a "larger" scale from you. Looks like a very crisp cast. I'm sure the result will do this model justice!

Well it IS Easter weekend--so I hope to make some serious progress on the model...

The decks have been painted, the hull apertures are mostly complete and have been cleaned up.
The deck hardware such as mooring bits, hatches etc have been picked out in black and the superstructure colour....

....which is to be the Mediterranean fleet colour!

This " yellow" was-- as referred to by some of my French warship colleagues-- a rather sad wishy-washy pale yellow- not the vibrant dark yellow that the box lid might lead one to believe....

I have settled on HUMBROL 103 ; a warm linen tone--which most closely equates-in my eyes to some contemporary illustrations and modern models of the ships of that era.

Attachment:
372380084.jpg
372380084.jpg [ 22.84 KiB | Viewed 6143 times ]

( it also compares well to the tone chosen by Carl Beetz for his Charlemagne)- see here at MW.com
http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/sh ... ature.html

Meanwhile-- the castings--fine as they are--still need to be prepared. The davit supporting brackets all had to have the fine wafer of resin removed-- not difficult--just arduous due to the number of apertures that neeed clearing.

Attachment:
Bouvet build 20.jpg
Bouvet build 20.jpg [ 74.16 KiB | Viewed 6143 times ]

I used a fine drill bit in a pin-vice for this task

Attachment:
Bouvet build 21.jpg
Bouvet build 21.jpg [ 64.27 KiB | Viewed 6143 times ]

The openbacked pilot house on the fore-bridge was supplied as a PE part.

No fold lines were etched here--requiring some careful alignment prior to bending.

It is now late at night....--but still making progress....

Making eyebrows--a tedious and repetitive task, --yet one which gives the hull a much more physical feel.

In 1/350 they are near-scale ( ish!)

( although a model colleague manages to do them in 1/700- perhaps a bit overscale- nevertheless very effective!)

( see the photo of the real thing below )

Attachment:
Bouvet build 31.jpg
Bouvet build 31.jpg [ 200.89 KiB | Viewed 6089 times ]

Making porthole eyebrows....
----------------------------

I form a spiral of thin copper wire on a suitable size piece of wire.
The spiral is cut into short spiral segments with a sharp blade.
These are then cut through again to form circles.
Thereafter these are cut again into just slightly less than semi-circles

The tedium of this process is high...
.....but then so is my tedium threshold.......( with modelboats anyhow... )

Attachment:
Bouvet build 32.jpg
Bouvet build 32.jpg [ 66.76 KiB | Viewed 6089 times ]

The difference is I believe worthwhile the hours of intense concentration...

here is a close up photo of the portholes BEFORE ....

Attachment:
Bouvet build 33.jpg
Bouvet build 33.jpg [ 118.37 KiB | Viewed 6089 times ]

and a close up the portholes after the application of the eyebrows.... AFTER

Time for some rest--more tomorrow!

Very nice progress so far, keep it coming!

Btw, what's your favourite "brew" for the teak (?) deck colour?

Happy modelling ~ Olaf!
