I don't know anything about the Midway hull, but if you go back to Page 1 of this thread, then look for a link that I or another person posted that shows a cross section of what the Montana hull would've looked like.

There are also some links to pics of the YMW kit that I posted back on Page 9 of this thread. IIRC, I think the kit sells for between $400-500.



Sorta, but not quite. Again, there is lots of links and info. on Pages 1 and 2 of this thread at the beginning that talk about the differences of the Montana. While my model unfortuneately does look like a "IOWA wannabe" so to speak, no matter what I or anyone else does, I don't think the final configuration of the Montana will ever be truly known since the ship was never built. Anybody else who builds one is going to build it in their own unique way, which is just as well since it's good to see some variation from modeler to modeler. Not even Phil Raver's Montana in the May 1992 FineScale Modeler is a "true" Montana either. But I still like it and I used his article as reference.

Thanks for all the info, I have a Tamiya 1/350 BigMo waiting to be built for over ten years. It has a classic warship Iowa convert resin parts waiting to be use also. After looking at your build I think the Mo's finally going to be look after. Again nice build man!---- Wait a min. I just said I would build a BB a 1/350 supercarrier guy! That makes me a traitor

Got about 20 more 20mm to go, then the rest of the 5" for the left side of the ship, then some photoetch to add, then anchor chain, then radar masts. Almost there. Wish me luck.

Although the ship was never built, the design was completed and builders plans were drawn. You can order a set of general plans from Floating Drydock.

After 5 years (Two of which were just research alone.), I think I can finally say that the USS Montana that I have built for my best friend is done........at least 99% that is. I still need to finish the anchors, anchor chains, wood base, and display case.
I apologise if anything on the model doesn't look right in any way such as painting, gluing, photoetch, etc. But being legally blind in one eye and having limited eyesight in my other eye means that I can't do all the detailed work I'd like to and don't have the skills that more experienced modelers have. So anyway, here's my pics of the completed Montana that I have done for my best friend. Enjoy!

And to think, here is what the resin hull looked like 5 years ago when my friend got it in the mail from a fellow modeler who cast it for us. What a difference 5 years makes, eh?

Timmy: If I have any rigging added, I think I'll let another modeling friend do that for me that lives in my area. I've tried rigging before and I suck at it.

Very nice build EJM!! This is one big monster of a ship you got there. Thanks a lot for sharing those pics and updates on your build. That's one of the best part about being on this forum. Reading about people's project and seeing the pictures that goes with those stories really make for a pleasant experience each time.

Wow. What a long road it's been. After 4-5 years, it's done. In conclusion, I just want to say thanks to everyone who helped me with this project with your hints, tips, advice, suggestions, and so forth. Thank You. I emailed pics of the ship to my friend last night and he loved it. He was very pleased that I could bring this ship to life for him. In fact, here is a copy of the email reply my friend sent me that I'd like to share:



Like I said before, I know the Montana I built isn't perfect in terms of painting, details, or maybe the right configuration, but as long as I gave it my best shot and my friend likes it and accepts it, then that's all that matters. A smile on his face means more to me than anything else.
A special Thank You also goes out to Chris Eddy, for he is the one who cast the resin hull for my friend so that he could have the Montana. Thank You, Chris.

So for anyone that has future plans to build a Montana, I wish you fair winds and smooth sailing and look forward to your progress reports and pics.

There's one other thing that I forgot that I may want to add to the Montana. Would anybody have 2 extra 1/350 scale paravanes they could send me out of their spares box? Didn't most battleships tend to have these somewhere near the bow area of the ship? Or did only selected battleships carry them? When I was robbing parts from Missouri kits to use for the Montana, I didn't see any paravanes in the Missouri kits? Why weren't any included when the kits were being produced?

If I remember correctly the Iowa class ships carried their behind the breakwater on the bow. I'm not sure why the kit doesn't come with any though! I'll look to see if I have any from a different kit.
