Hello,
I've just received the dainty little WEM 1/350 kit of HMS Grey Goose (steam gunboat) but am struggling to reconcile the quoted camouflage colours with photographs. The kit's instructions show it to be in a sweeping Light Admiralty Disruptive pattern of G45 (=507C), B15 and B55. A very nice reproduction of this scheme on Grey Goose is a photograph (also widely available in the internet) in David Williams' book on naval camouflage (p.125). The problem is that the lightest colour coincides with the purported "G45", not the expected palest colour B55 (the clue is in the number, denoting the approximate reflectance value). HMS Grey Goose and it sisters do not appear in the Raven books so the official Admiralty pattern is (to me) unknown. Williams says Grey Goose is in Western Approaches colours but this doesn't work either unless the darker pair of colours are not WA Blue and WA Green. Looking at hundreds of photographs, I suspect very many "Western Approaches" schemes (the shapes/patterns at least) used alternatives, including MS2 and B6 as mentioned by Raven himself. My own opinion is that it might be B5/MS3/ MS4A (a known combination for the light admiralty patterns). Any clarification gladly received. Cheers, Graham B.
