Afternoon

At present I am building the Ironside Nachi. Looking at the grey paint I need I see Tamiya LP offer 4
Kure, Sasebo, Yokosuka and Maizuru?
How do know which one right? I assume initially it depends upon where the ship was built?

Can anyone advise please

What I can gather, built in Kure and the last major refit was also at Kure? Nachi is not listed in Imperial Japanese Navy Grey's by John Snyder. Hope this helps you out?

They're painted the paint of whereever shipyard they were when they were painted.

By "ironside", did you mean "ironclad", which is what Aoshima calls their series of 1/350 ship kits? There was no ironclad Nachi, only the heavy cruiser.

If you are referring to the heavy cruiser Nachi produced as a kit by Aoshima, then go to CombinedFleet's record of the ship's movement, pick a date you want to depict, then see which shipyard she was last at and that's a reasonable bet for which grey she was in: http://www.combinedfleet.com/nachi_t.htm

Thanks both, yes Ironclad sorry

I have a good few IJN cruisers, battleship and carriers in the stash. So it looks like I need to find out where a ship was built to buy the correct grey

Where they were built isn't all that important unless you're depicting the ship when they're built. Most of the kits depict the ships quite a few years after they were built, when they could've stopped in for new paints at any of the shipyards along the way. That's why you have to pick a time period and look for the last shipyard stop they made.

(Though even then, there's always the chance they may be using up old stocks they might have from another yard)

With ' IJN' stretching oveer such a large period, is there a database somewhere that has information on what ship, went where for a refit, and what work was done?

The CombinedFleet.com posted above is your best bet, but you'll have to read through each ship's record.

Thanks, but that only seems to acknowledge the WW2 era

The records vary, depending on ship.

The Japanese Wikipedia entries for various IJN ships often carry at least some prewar details. You'd just have to use something like Google Translate to read them.
