I just came back from JerseyCon with a few new kits to build and one of them is the Zuikaku. I love the green camo, but the instructions say to get the right shade I should mix both green shades with grey. I'm not a fan of mixing paints and I was wondering what paints (acrylics please) would work best without the mixing. Thanks for you time. Brian M

You can find some of the colors in this chart. Testors did make them in acrylic, but discontinued that line.

The lighest color is Type 22, the darkest Type 2. I'll check the instruction for my Amagi and see what the color calls outs are - she wore a similar pattern to Zuikaku.

I believe these are lacquor based, but would at least match without mixing: http://www.hlj.com/product/GNZCS612

According to the Skywave/PitRoad instructions for the Amagi, there are three shades of green. The two darker colors are called "Dark Green" and "Light Green". While most of the color callout sheet is in Japanese, it seems that they consider the Dark Green to be Type 22 and the Light Green to be Type 21 camo. However, according to the chart linked above, the Dark Green is Type 2 and the Light Green is Type 21, while there is an intermediate shade of green which is actually Type 22.

Anyway, here is the color callouts, using the Snyder and Short chart as a guide:

Pit-Road Ship Color Paints:
Type 2: PC17A Dark Green
Type 22: PC17B Light Green

Mr Color Paints:
Type 21: SC05

Hello,

Sometimes, I see models of zuikaku with grey aa guns and equipment, on a camouflaged ship.

So question is : on a camouflaged IJN carrier, were binoculars/launches/barges/25mm aa /127mm aa/directors/etc... grey, or camouflaged as well ?

It's impossible to know, since true color photos of the ships as armed are almost non-existent. I believe that everything was camouflaged, excepting AA gun barrels.
