Hopefully it's not too late to jump on this band wagon with my entry: a pair of 1:700 Benson class DD's.

Destroyers are not my main interest, so I know I'll build these two full of errors, but the Dragon kit seemed like (and probably is) one of the best 1:700 scale kits ever produced, so this build was the perfect excuse to pick it up for a look-see.

A few extras to go with the build are a couple WEM PE sets for the class (intended for the Pit-Road kit, but I assume they should fit), some Lion Roar 40mm Bofors and two sheets of Gator Masks for MS 31/3d and MS 32/16d from http://www.gatorsmask.com .

The intention if the build is to show off the differences in fit between two ships, probably having one tied pier side, and the other docking. As I mentioned, DD's aren't my focus so please forgive me if I don't get all the details right.

Since I want to tackle dazzle paint on these, I need to upgrade the AA fit to later in the war than issued in the kit, so I've made resin copies of the 20mm gun tubs and a couple of the after decks to use for the gun shields. I'm thinking that one of these will end up with four dual Bofors and three 20mm's at the bridge front, and the other something different. (Don't worry DD fans - the elongated resin tubs are for an IJN project.)





One last note: I need to give Kenny at Gators Mask recognition for outstanding customer service. The USPS mangled the sheets, and Kenny really went above and beyond in how he handled the replacement for me. He's one of the good guys!

Here is my late and changed entry. 1/700 Skywave Akikaze, Minekaze class Destroyer. This kit so far for me has been a nightmare. Not the kit itself, but my bad luck in trying to build it. Especially concerning the bridge area. I can't seem to get the photoetch windows to cooperate. Tomorrow night I will hopefully have them correctly installed. It is an easy kit, early war 1941/2 fit. Not much of any AA guns to speak of. I have the hull primed, deguassing cable added, anchors, and Lionroar photoetch hose reels installed. I had problems with the hose reels too. My ineptness at work. The bridge is about 75% done. I have to add photoetch bridge windows, ladders, and railings. Hopefully everything will all come together without any major mishaps. Oh yeah, the deck has had a primer coat of linoleum.

My progress has been slow. I did get all the guns done and added some depth charges as seen in the picture. I need to mount the model to a base before I add the railings and rigging.




As always I have enjoyed looking at all the progress pictures you guys have posted.

Gone Asiatic`s entry is the 1/700 scale IJN Akitsuki (1904) from 104 工作部.

Must add railing, a little rigging, and some moredetails here and there I was able to discern from photographs particularly of the focsle.

Yes, sort of...
Finewaterline is a SIG from IPMS/UK, but opened to ship modelers from all over the world.
As the name says, the main interest is to portray ships in their natural element, water.
Also, FWL produceS some very interesting resin semi-kits, to help modelers fill in gaps by major and smaller manufacturers.
All the profit is used to charity - RNLI for example...

GA - first and foremost Fine Waterline (FW) is our ship modelling club. When we first formed FW we never envisaged that we would produce kits.

The kits came about when I started a project nearly 2 years ago to build post-war RN frigates for my own collection. It quickly became obvious that I needed more than one hull, so the obvious solution was casting. This left me with the problem of a big outlay on casting materials for 2 hulls, therefore I offered extra castings for sale to basically cover my own costs.

Surprisingly this quickly gained a fair bit of interest and made a profit which I thought was best given to charity.

Mike McCabe, Don McKeand and Roy Allen who are fellow members of FW all hit on the same idea at roughly the same time so before long we had a range of subjects in production, all on the basis of raising money for our favourite charity, RNLI.

We are currently taking a break from production but aim to be back later in the year with some new kits of new subjects. As they are our main interest, our kits will be mostly British subjects.

The kits are all aimed at peple who are prepared to put in a fair bit of work themselves, ie we provide hull and superstructure. Where commercial parts are available, such as boats, guns etc we suggest to use them. As Rui says, they are aimed at filling in apparent and logical (to us anyway) gaps in what's available commercially.

Thanks Nick! I used the Gold Medal Ultra railings. They're my favorite railings to use. Nothing else even comes close. Plus- they're really not hard to apply, and you can adjust them slightly after attaching them ( the angle, not the attached base).
