I've decided on doing the RNN Evertsen in her 1942 camo'd look of light gray dark gray. I probably won't start it until the first week of May. Good thing this build last until October. :heh:

Bob - you're just doing the Evertsen to spite me aren't you?!

Well sir, you leave me no choice but to... errr... challenge you to a... ummm... battle on the high seas!

May the best Evertsen win ;)

In all seriousness, given that Bob is doing the 1942 version, I'll do the 1930s version with floatplane. I was leaning that way anyway :)

I received the 1940 Benson yesterday and have decided to go with it. I also managed to locate some WEM Colourcoats USN #20 Standard Deck Grey, which should get here by the time I need it. Three days to go. Can't wait to get to it.

I could not stop myself and decided to participate.

I will attempt to build USS Farenholt DD-491 (1/350) using Dragon USS Laffey kit, GMM PE and... at the moment I do not know what I will need else. :eyebrows:

I just got my WEM four-stacker PE in the post yesterday and it looks beautiful; that said, there are a couple of things I still want in PE so I think I'll pick up the GMM set as well--can't have too many leftover PE parts in the spares bin I say :)

Question though: I know L'Arsenal makes 1/400 single Oerlikons (I'm considering picking up a set of those too), but does anyone know if there are any manufacturers who offer other 1/400 escort-style weapons? I'm thinking Hedgehog, depth-charge throwers, 12pdr 12cwt etc. Most of the weaponry accessories in that scale are for the big boys; battleship and cruiser barrels and turrets.

I'm jazzed for the GB to start--it'll give me a nice distraction this weekend while I finish up my SUMMERSIDE :)

Cheers,

Sean

Let it begin, let it begin!

And begin I have.

So, as stated before, I will be building the Hr. Ms. Evertsen (1928). I'm using the Airfix 1/600 HMS Hotspur as a basis for this ship, as the hull is almost identical (some slight tweaks required), and much of the superstructure is very similar.

Of course, closely comparing the plans, despite the many similarities, there are also differences which need to be addressed.

Image

One of the glaring differences between the two is the size of the funnels. The funnels on the Evertsen are significantly larger than the Hotspur, so using scratch build techniques I found on the forums, I have made some new funnels:

Next job is fixing the hull.

Perfect! If the post would work fine and bring the hull for my Ersatz Triglav today, I could start it!

Well, I'm ready to go, with the exception of the deck grey paint which is making it's way to me as we speak. Here are the elements of this build:

I'm up in the air on whether I am going to use the Cyber-Hobby detail set or just go with spares box stuff. Hopefully I'll get to cutting some sprue tomorrow.

I tackling a multiship build of the IJN Nashi/JMSDF Wakaba, in distinct phases of her career. The Wakaba, in her radar trial ship role, is entered in the Cold War group build. But she began her career as the sixth ship in the IJN late-war Tachibana Class - the IJN Nashi - and I am proposing to enter the Nashi in this build.

Circa 1945, Nashi was sunk in a US air raid. Raised in 1954; salvaged, refitted and recommissioned in 1956 as a JMSDF training ship. Only ship to serve in both IJN and JMSDF. Post 1958, she was fitted with ungainly (for this size ship) SPS 8B and SPS-12 radars, for radar trial purposes. This latter fit just screams Cold War, despite a relative lack of weaponry.

I've always been interested in seeing distinct phases of one ship side-by-side, particularly a ship that was raised from the dead and given new life.

Nashi, as built and as sunk/salvaged will be built from the following:

Pitroad SPW05, IJN Destroyer Kaki (5th ship in Tachibana Class). This kit comes with a small fret of PE: antenna, AA guns, depth charge rack, radar, etc. Same frets and instructions as kit below.

Pitroad W77, IJN Destroyer Tachibana (1st ship in class). No PE.

Interesting to note that many ships in this class survived the war, served repatriation duties, or were transferred to foreign navies, including UK, China, and Russia. Perhaps some interesting modeling there.

Following are pictures of the kit boxes, and the hull and sprues and PE specific to Nashi.

Hi, moomoon.

I just have to ask, why the razor blade?

So, my Triglav's hull arrived yesterday, and is now in works. After cleaning minor pouring traces, I noticed that the bulleye pattern is not quite correct, and also that they shall have an eyebrow. Started attaching Alliance Modelwork's bulleyes on correct places...

My WEM brass arrived for DDV 8. The upcoming steps are scratch building the hanger and altered aft VLS launcher. More to come ladies and gentlemen!

Beware of Sharktopus. He's already been sited off the coast of Japan. It's a short trip to the West coast of North America, guys.

A quick hit update. The attachment bolts have been put in place and the hull has been temporarily attached to the base so I can work on a steady platform. I set it up with the nuts on the underside so I can remove and replace it at any time. The upper and lower hull halves have been glued together and the seam has been sanded. It was a very good fit and I didn't find any spots requiring filler. I drilled out the portholes and also attached the main deck pieces and it has been primed:

The next step will be spraying and masking the boot top stripe and then paining the lower hull.
